It is with great delight and anticipation that we announce to you an event that promises to become an annual celebration in Waterloo. Dionysia, a festival of food and wine for the entire family is organized by the Greek-Cypriot Community of Waterloo Region. It will be held in Moses Springer Arena, 150 Lincoln Road, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, on Sunday, September 14, 1997 from 10:00 am to 10 p.m.. Admission for adults will be a mere $2 and children 12 and under accompanied by adults, may enter free of charge.

Dionysia commemorates and mirrors the internationally famed Wine Festival of Limassol, Cyprus. There, in the middle of September, for 12 festive days and nights, Cyprus wine pours freely for all. Delicious local dishes are served and friendliness abounds. There are professional and amateur performances of comedians, dancers, singers and players. Likewise, our Dionysia is sure to feast all the senses. It will delight taste buds with delectable Cypriot cuisine. An assortment of familiar Mediterranean dishes such as souvlaki, gyros, tzatziki and baklava will be enhanced by conventional Cypriot foodstuffs. Particular attention will be paid to vegetarian diets. To enliven the palate an exclusive selection of Cypriot wines and beer will be available. Melodious Cypriot tunes will be played by a live band, Synaxis, and will be sang by a choir. Dance groups will entertain participants and they in turn will have opportunities to join in dance lessons and other demonstrations. Participants may even partake in the crushing of grapes as Vrakades, men in traditional garb will compete with rhyming couples and comedians will reproduce familiar Cypriot sketches. In addition, children will be introduced to games typically played in Cyprus.

Since alcohol will be served at this festival, our organizers are eager to promote safety on the roads by offering free soft-drinks to designated drivers.

All interested welcome!
