Space is limited. For reservations please call 202-785-8430 Light refreshments will be available. 1997 represents the fiftieth anniversary of the Truman doctrine. Today, the preservation of stability in the Aegean still constitutes a vital U.S. national interest. Over the past year, events have shown that this cannot be taken for granted. In January 1996 American intervention was necessary to avert confrontation between Greece and Turkey, both U.S. allies in NATO. Secretary of State Madeline Albright has stated that she places a high priority on defusing tensions in the area. Mr. Carey Cavanaugh is Director of the State Department's Office of Southern European Affairs. In recent months he has been a frequent visitor to the region for high level discussions with the relevant authorities.
