BIO: Mr. Leonsis is an impressive, dynamic young guy. He graduated from Georgetown University in the 70s with a degree in American Studies. But he was intrigued by PCs. His first job was with Wang in Boston in that company's halcyon days. Like most intelligent entrepreneurs, he got bored and left in 1981 to start up his own company, Redgate Publishing Corporation. Redgate created a data base of all software available for IBM PCs. Leonsis sold his company for $15 million three years after he founded it. He then went onto to discover the lucrative commercial possibilities of digital media and founded Redgate Communications Corporation in 1986 to develop some of the first shopping catalogs on CD ROM. AOL acquired Redgate Communications for the equivalent of $33 million in stock. At that time, Leonsis joined Steve Case at AOL and became President of AOL Services company. In the recent restructuring at AOL, Leonsis became President and CEO of AOL Studios, the business unit responsible for turning AOL into a virtual media company (i.e. WEB TV and all that cool stuff). Mr. Leonsis believes that the Internet growth will be explosive and will follow the pattern of the cable TV industry in terms of infrastructure and original content brands. Mr. Leonsis is only 40 years old and, in addition to his accomplishments at AOL, he has written three books including "Blue Magic: An Insider's View to the Launch of the IBM PC" and served as mayor of Orchid, Florida. He is an enthusiastic and engaging speaker, self-described as "funny". With all the talk of whether or not AOL can survive the competition, I expect this to be a fascinating presentation to Greeks and non-Greeks alike.
