The Musical Society of Northern Greece and the Argonauts NGO for Culture are organizing a major European literary evening to be held next November (04-05 November 2006), in the main ceremonial hall of the Aristotle University, Thessaloniki. The "2nd Thessaloniki Poetry Festival" will take as its subject:

"THE OLIVE: The sacred tree, symbol of athletic games and of peace"

Attended by poets from all 25 countries of the European Union. Up to three poems (a maximum of 68 lines, in two copies) on the stated theme, a photograph and biographical details of each poet participating will be included in a lavish volume to be published by Idrogios Publications.

The poems may or may not have been already published, but must not have received any award at any event in the past in any of the 25 EU countries participating in the "2nd Thessaloniki Poetry Festival". The volume to be published will be of high quality, 21x23cm in size, and will include two facing pages of 42x23cm for the photograph, poems and biographical details of each participant. The greatest care will be taken to ensure the highest aesthetic quality in presentation of this material. During the festival those poets who wish, and who declare an interest in advance, may present lyrics to be set to music (songs), the best of these subsequently forming the basis for a musical CD. The setting of the poets' words to music will be the exclusive responsibility of our own associate composer. A special committee will choose the poems to be recited at the festival. Poets who do not wish to do so need not recite their work, nor will the lyrics set to music be recited. Official languages of the event: English, Greek, French, German, Spanish, Italian. Invitations will be extended to all ambassadors and consuls in Greece of the participating countries, as well as representatives of local authorities, members of parliament, MEPs and other officials. Awards will be bestowed to poets from the participating countries by the Ministries of Culture, Education, Macedonia and Thrace, the Deputy Minister for Sport, the Prefecture of Thessaloniki, the Municipal Council of Thessaloniki and the event sponsors. The event will be covered by the media and copies of videos and photographs will be available to those who request them, as well as certificates of attendance, on parchment, for all participants.

An application form which those wishing to attend the event are invited to complete and return can be found at http://www.argonautes.gr/announcement_en.html
