GOTELECOM GARNERS SECOND EMMY AWARD

Greek Orthodox Telecommunications, the television ministry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, has received a New York EMMY award for Outstanding Religious Programming for the documentary "Iakovos: A Legacy". Also nominated in this category were programs from stations WABC and WPIX and cable channel New York 1 News.

The award was announced on April 27th (Easter Sunday) in New York City, during a gala awards dinner at the Marriot Hotel. Members of the GOTelecom production team are Nicholas Furris, George Pofantis and Marissa P. Costidis. The production of the documentary "Iakovos: A Legacy" was made possible by a grant from the Leadership 100 Endowment Fund.

This was the third EMMY nomination and second award for GOTelecom. The program "A Light Still Bright: The Ecumenical Patriarchate" was nominated and won the award in 1991, and in 1994 the documentary "History of Orthodox Christianity" was nominated.

The EMMY awards are presented by the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. All entries are judged by television professionals from Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia and Hollywood. Among the presenters at the awards were New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Libby Pataki, past and present N.Y. Yankees Joe DiMaggio, Joe Torre, Wade Boggs, actors Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Nell Carter, Madeline Kahn, Kim Zimmer and others.

In receiving the award, Marissa Costidis and George Pofantis thanked the Academy members for recognizing GOTelecom's work, Leadership 100 for sponsoring the entire production and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese for its support and encouragement.

GOTelecom has produced over 130 religious, educational and cultural programs since 1989. It has also been responsible for live transmissions, such as the Enthronement Ceremony of Archbishop Spyridon from New York and the Sunday of Orthodoxy Celebration from the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The programs air on the ODYSSEY CHANNEL, a religious cable network that reaches 35 million homes around the country. They are also broadcast by local Greek and Orthodox programmers and are distributed on videocassette.
