The Socrates Kokkalis Graduate Student Workshop

Call FOR PAPERS

The Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe, John F. Kennedy School of Government, and the Southeast European Study Group, Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Harvard University will hold the third annual Kokkalis Graduate Student Workshop on February 9-10, 2001.

Graduate and doctoral students are invited to submit proposals for papers to be delivered at the workshop. Proposals should be a maximum of 500 words and should fall into one of the thematic units listed below, relative to one or more of the countries specified:

Civil society and human rights Media and democracy Crime and corruption Economic reform, state administration and development Old and new security concerns

Albania Bosnia-Herzegovina Bulgaria Croatia Cyprus Greece Hungary F.Y.R. of Macedonia Moldova Romania Slovenia Turkey F.R. of Yugoslavia

A number of grants for travel and accommodation are available. Deadline for submission is October 31, 2000. Proposal and CVs should be submitted electronically to Kokkalis_Program@ksg.harvard.edu and should also be mailed, together with one letter of recommendation to:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can apply? Students that are currently pursuing their Masters or PhD degrees or are engaged in any other form of graduate education. Recent graduates, undergraduate students, and professionals that are not currently in school cannot apply.

Does the applicant's nationality matter? No

Does the applicant's focus of interest matter? Yes. We can only accept applications with topics related to the region of Southeastern and East-Central Europe, namely Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

How long should the proposal be? Up to 500 words long

Can an applicant submit more than one proposed topic? Yes

Is there a separate application for financial assistance? No. All accepted proposals will be automatically considered for financial support.

What does the grant include? It strictly covers travel and accommodation expenses. The amount given to each participant will be determined based on his/her distance from Boston, and will be granted after the workshop's conclusion.

When is the deadline for submission? October 31, 2000

When will people be notified? In mid-December 2000

How many people are there going to be accepted? Approximately 25 people

If an application is accepted, how long should the paper be? Between 4000 and 6000 words long. Accepted applicants should bare in mind that they will have to present their papers during the workshop. The presentation should not be more than 15 minutes long.

When will the deadline for paper submission be for accepted applicants? Late January 2001
