The European Association of Modern Greek Studies (Evropaiki Etaireia Neoellinikon Spoudon) in collaboration with the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies (Byzantinisch-Neugriechisches Seminar) of the Freie Universitaet Berlin announces its first conference with the title "THE GREEK WORLD BETWEEN EAST AND WEST, 1453 - 1981" ("O ellinikos kosmos anamesa stin Anatoli kai ti Dysi, 1453 - 1981". The conference will be held in the Free University of Berlin on October 2 - 4, 1998.

The aims of the conference are to
- disseminate information and knowledge about current research programmes in European Universities;
- to provide the opportunity to scholars from Eastern and Western European Universities to meet and discuss;
- to further the research and study opportunities in Modern Greek;
- to open a productive dialogue between young scholars in the field.

The topics of the conference include: Cultural Anthropology, Linguistics, History and Philology.

For paper proposals please send: title of the paper and abstract (one page). Languages: Greek, German, English, French.

Deadline for submission: December 20, 1997.
