CONFERENCE MARKS 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF TRUMAN DOCTRINE
A public conference marking the 50th anniversary of the Truman Doctrine
will be held March 21 and 22 at the University of Missouri-St.
Louis. The Truman Doctrine and its Impact on Greece: A Fiftieth
Anniversary Reassessment will be held in the Pierre Laclede
Honors College on Friday, March 21, 2:00-6:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 22,
8:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
Speakers include historian Alonzo Hamby, author of the definitive
biography of President Harry S. Truman, internationally renowned Greek and
American foreign policy experts, and leading Greek politicians. Though
there is no fee to attend the conference, reservations are required. For

Announced by President Truman on March 12, 1947 in the midst of the
Greek Civil War, the Truman Doctrine was a major turning point in Greek,
American and world history and a cornerstone of the Cold War that dominated
the world for over 40 years. The Truman Doctrine and its global commitment
to support "the free peoples of the world" continues to shape
U.S. foreign policy today.
This conference will bring together distinguished Greek and American
scholars, government and public officials, educators and students and
members of the Greek community to discuss the legacies of the Truman
Doctrine for the world we live in fifty years later. The conference is
sponsored by the Karakas Family Foundation Alliance for the Advancement of
Hellenic Studies of the Center for International Studies at UM-St. Louis
and the Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism, Sacramento,
in cooperation with the Hellenic Spirit Foundation, the Missouri Historical
Society and the Truman Library Institute.
