INTENSIVE COURSE

MATHEMATICS IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

APPLICATIONS IN ANTHROPOLOGY

Komotini, August 1-14, 1996


The Laboratory of Anthropology of Democritus University of Thrace organises an intensive course on "Mathematics in Biological Sciences" under the auspices of European Anthropology Association (EAA).

Organizing Committee:

Professor C. Krimbas, Univ. of Athens

Professor N. I. Xirotiris, Democritus Univ. of Thrace


The sessions will be held in Komotini the first two weeks of August 1996. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students in Anthropology, Biology, Mathematics, Demography, Medicine, Social Sciences, Archeology, Ethnology etc may participate.

Interested students should send Prof. N. I. Xirotiris or via E-mail the enclosed application form, a short Curriculum Vitae and a letter of recommendation from their supervisor or cancellor, before April 15, 1996.

The number of participants is limited to 30, therefore a selection of the students may be necessary.

The Democritus University of Thrace will provide full board accommodation to all participant students during their stay in Komotini, but not their transportation cost.

During the course, there will be some parallel activities such as sightseeing to place of environmental and archeological interest of Thrace.

The theoretical lectures and the practical sessions will be delivered by the professors:

R. Chakraborty (Univ. of Texas),

Y. Chistov (Museum of Anthr.& Ethnogr. St Petersburg),

E. Ginsburg (Univ. of Tel Aviv),

C. Krimbas (Univ. of Athens),

G. Livshits (Univ. of Tel Aviv),

M. Nei (PennState Univ.),

J. Sourdis (Agric. Univ. of Athens),

C. Susanne (Vrije Univ. Brussel),

G. Van Vark (Univ. of Groningen),

N. Takahata (Graduate Univ. for Advanced Studies Hayama, Japan),

The lessons will be taught in English, German or French, therefore a sufficient knowledge of two of the above languages is necessary.

A certificate to all the participatnt will be granted at the end of the course, as well as the corresponding ECTS credits.
