[01] CONSTITUTIONAL REVISION BASED ON SIX PRINCIPLES

The ruling party of New Democracy parliament deputies will reach their final decisions on the revision of the constitution today. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis addressed his party's parliament deputies and ruled out changes in the Church-State relations and the Hellenic Republic President election process.

According to the prime minister, the constitutional revision principles are education, justice independence, environmental protection, effective protection of property, the state at the people's service and transparency.

Yesterday, welcoming main opposition Socialist Party PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou to brief him on the issue, the prime minister stated that consensus can be reached through dialogue.

Mr. Papandreou, addressing the party's parliamentary group coordinating body meeting, stated that the government displays hastiness in dealing with the revision of the constitution.

[02] WORLD CONFERENCE ON BIRD FLU

Health Minister Nikitas Kaklamanis urged all Greek citizens yesterday to avoid making unnecessary trips to Turkey where situation is vague regarding bird flu.

Strict measures are into effect in regions bordering Turkey.

According to official figures, a total of twenty people have been infected with the bird flu virus in Turkey. Four of them died, 11 are still hospitalized and five have been completely cured.

Meanwhile, the two-day world conference on bird flu gets underway in Beijing, China today with the participation of representatives from 90 countries and 25 organizations aimed at coordinating action to avert the likelihood of a bird flu pandemic.

Greece will be represented by Deputy Health Minister Giorgos Constantopoulos.

[03] SYSTEMATIC INVESTIGATION

Investigation continues in a systematic and persistent way to lead to the arrest of the offenders, stated Minister of Public Order Giorgos Voulgarakis after meeting with the two special guards, who pursued the robbers of the National Bank of Greece branch in the center of Athens yesterday, and congratulated them for their reaction.

Four individuals were injured in the exchange of gunfire that followed the bank robbery among them one of the robbers, a 28-year-old man who was known to the police because he had been briefly detained in the past in the region of Exarchia, Athens. He was arrested after being seriously wounded in the shootout.

The likelihood for the case to be linked with terrorism is being examined by the police based on the robbers' guns, their determination and way of action.

[04] ACTOR ANDREAS BARKOULIS HOSPITALIZED

Andreas Barkoulis, one of the most popular movie actors in Greece during the golden years of the Greek cinema in the 1960s, was admitted to Agia Olga Hospital in Nea Ionia, Athens a few days ago.

A medical bulletin on his health condition is expected later in the evening.

[05] THE PRIME MINISTER ON CONSTITUTIONAL REVISION

The ruling party of New Democracy Parliament deputies will reach their final decisions on the revision of the constitution today after being addressed by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis who ruled out changes in the Church-State relations and the Hellenic Republic President election process.

Mr. Karamanlis called on the Parliament deputies to submit proposals on the revision while yesterday welcoming main opposition Socialist Party PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou at Maximos Mansion in Athens to brief him on the issue he stated that a consensus can be reached.

After the meeting, Mr. Papandreou said that the Constitution does not hinder the government from exercising its policies while he stressed that PASOK will submit complete and detailed proposals.

[06] THE CONSTITUTIONAL REVISION FRAMEWORK

The ruling party of New Democracy parliament deputies will reach final decisions on constitutional revision in their meeting today addressed by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.
