    Athens, 19 December 2005 (13:37 UTC+2)

The Prime Minister briefed Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias this morning on the outcome of the EU Summit Meeting and the agreement achieved on the 2007-2013 budget. Greece was allocated 20.1 billion euros.

The Hellenic Republic President speaking with the Prime Minister in the presence of journalists commented that things are very good for Greece stating that we have avoided what we were afraid of.

On his part, the Prime Minister underlined that the final result after the long and tough negotiations and alliances satisfies us all.

Mr. Karamanlis stated that all goals set were met and not one euro was lost in spite of the fact that the budget approved was smaller than the one proposed by the Luxembourg EU Presidency.

    [02] ARCTIC TEMPERATURES IN GREECE

    Thessaloniki, 19 December 2005 (14:16 UTC+2)

Frost and chilling temperatures are the dominant characteristics of weather in north Greece and snow chains are necessary for vehicles on the provincial road network in central and west Macedonia. Also, snow chains are necessary on the mountain road network in north Chalkidiki and Orestiada and the roads to ski resorts in the region.

Arctic temperatures are being recorded in north Greece. Indicative temperatures: Nevrokopi -17 degrees Celsius, Florina -10, Kastoria -6, Kozani -5, Kavala, Alexandroupolis and Serres 0 degrees Celsius, while in Thessaloniki temperature was 1 degree Celsius.

Schools in Florina, northwest Greece, will not open today, while in Kozani the school bells rang with a one-hour delay.

[03] THE STATE BUDGET IN PARLIAMENT

    Athens, 19 December 2005 (13:52 UTC+2)

The debate on the 2006 state budget, to be completed at midnight on Thursday with a roll-call vote, was launched in the parliament plenary session in the presence of the Prime Minister and the political party leaders.

The big success in Brussels, where Greece was allocated a total of 20.1 billion euros for the period 2007-2013, was stressed by ruling New Democracy party main speaker Savvas Tsitouridis who attributed the success to the strategy, plan, systematic work and negotiation followed by the government and the Prime Minister.

Main opposition Socialist Party PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou stated in an interview that the proposed state budget does not reflect the truth.

    [04] SUNNY WITH ARCTIC TEMPERATURES

    Thessaloniki, 19 December 2005 (16:54 UTC+2)

Weather in most regions in central and west Macedonia, north Greece, was sunny today but temperature was very low reaching arctic levels.

After the snowfall recorded in the past few days and because of ice on the road surface as a result of the very low temperatures, drivers on the national and provincial road network of Florina and the provincial road network of Kastoria are advised to use antiskid chains.

Snow chains are also necessary for vehicles on the mountains of Chalkidiki, in Kozani and Grevena because large parts of the road surface are covered with ice.

In Thessaloniki, it was sunny today with temperature at 5 degrees Celsius, while a road ice warning has been issued to be in effect at sundown mainly in the north suburbs where snow fell yesterday.
