    Ruling New Democracy party leads main opposition Socialist Party PASOK by 3.5 percentage points, according to an opinion poll conducted by the polling company VPRC on behalf of SKY radio on November 7-8, 2005.

    Specifically, ND has 42.5% and PASOK 39% followed by Communist Party 8%, Synaspismos 4.5%, LAOS 3.5%.

    Most fit for the post of the Prime Minister is Costas Karamanlis 51% compared to Giorgos Papandreou 22%.

    Regarding former Prime Minister Costas Simitis, 47% of those who responded to the questionnaire have a positive view about him and 42% negative (in July 2005 the responses were 52% and 41% respectively).

    [02] INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR AKRIVOS TSOLAKIS

    Moscow, 10 November 2005 (13:15 UTC+2)

    The international organization Flight Safety Foundation honored Akrivos Tsolakis, president of the Greek Committee investigating Accidents and Flight Safety for his contribution to flight safety in a ceremony held in Moscow.

    In an interview he gave with Mr. Tsolakis the president of Flight Safety Foundation was expressed in a positive way about the Olympic Airlines' quality and safety of flights stating that the responsible judicial authorities in Greece were impeccable during the investigation on the causes of the crash of the Cypriot Helios Airlines passenger plane in the region of Grammatikos near Athens last August.

    [03] FOREIGN MINISTER MOLYVIATIS IN BAHRAIN TOMORROW

    Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis departs for Bahrain tomorrow to attend the proceedings of the Forum on the Future formed at the initiative of the G8 and aimed at promoting a partnership relation with the wider Middle East.

    Foreign Ministry spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos stated that the Forum will decide on the establishment of an institute for the Future that will support and finance the reforms in the region with a central role to the non governmental organizations and the society of citizens.

    [04] KOUMOUTSAKOS ON THE ATTACKS IN JORDAN

    The Greek government condemns the heinous and cowardly terrorist attacks in Amman, Jordan and extends its condolences to the families of the victims and the Jordanian government.

    The statement was made by Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos regarding the attacks in Jordan.

    [05] EVENT COMMEMORATING THE DEATH OF KEMAL ATATURK

    Thessaloniki, 10 November 2005 (15:21 UTC+2)

    More than 400 students and teachers from private schools in Turkey attended a ceremony in the yard of the Turkish consulate in Thessaloniki commemorating the 67th anniversary of the death of Kemal Ataturk, the father of modern Turkey.

    Ataturk died on November 10, 1938 and today's ceremony attended 422 students and teachers who came from Turkey especially for this purpose.

    The Turkish consulate building in Thessaloniki shares the same yard with the house where Ataturk was born in 1881 and is now used as a museum.

    [06] EARTHQUAKE OF MAGNITUDE 4.3 IN KARPATHOS

    Athens, 10 November 2005 (14:28 UTC+2)

    An earthquake measuring 4.3% on the Richter scale was recorded at 6.47 this morning in the sea region east of the south Aegean island of Karpathos.

    According to the Athens National Observatory Geodynamic Institute and Thessaloniki Aristotle University Geophysics Laboratory, the weak earthquake was recorded 440 kms southeast of Athens and the epicenter was located in the sea east of Karpathos.

    [07] EARTHQUAKE OF MAGNITUDE 3.6 IN PTOLEMAIDA

    Ptolemaida, 10 November 2005 (14:01 UTC+2)

    An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale was recorded at 10.57 this morning and its epicenter was located east of the city of Ptolemaida in the prefecture of Kozani, northwest Greece.

    Thessaloniki Aristotle University seismologist Vasilis Karakostas stated to ANA-MPA that the incident is characterized as an isolated one and is not regarded as being out of the region's ordinary seismic activity.

    [08] STRIKE IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR

    Athens, 10 November 2005 (13:52 UTC+2)

    The Confederation of Public Servants (ADEDY) holds a 24-hour strike today creating serious problems in the public sector.

    Hospitals operate on skeleton staff while all passenger plane flights, domestic and foreign, have been cancelled.

    Tomorrow public schools will be closed due to the fact that the kindergarten, elementary and secondary education teachers are on a 48-hour strike.

    [09] MEETING OF FRENCH PHILHELLENES IN MARSEILLES

    Marseilles, 10 November 2005 (17:42 UTC+2)

    The establishment of a Hellenic Cultural Center in Marseilles, the spread of the teaching of the Greek language in France and the further cultural rapprochement of France and Greece will be discussed in the 3rd Forum of the league of associations of philhellenes Comite de Liaison Des Associations Philhellens de France - CLAP to be held in Marseilles on November 11 and 12 under the auspices of the Greek consulate in the city.

    Greek consul general Petros Panagiotopoulos stated to ANA-MPA that the 3rd meeting takes place in a very Greek city-port in France with a history and tradition, with Hellenism and Mediterranean liveliness.

    Mr. Panagiotopoulos stated that he is impressed by the way the philhellenes in France express themselves, stressing that their love for Greece is pure and through the more than 30 associations across France they contribute greatly to the strengthening of cultural relations between the two countries.

    During the roundtable discussion on November 12 they will propose making modern Greek a third language elective in the French secondary education system. A statement will be signed toward this direction addressed to the Ministries of Education in Greece and France.

    For the record, an agreement on the teaching of the Greek language is in effect for the past three years between the Greek consulate and the public high school in Marseilles and it can be used as a model for the introduction of the Greek language in the French education system.

    [10] THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH TO VISIT VIENNA

    Vienna, 10 November 2005 (15:47 UTC+2)

    Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will visit Vienna on November 14-18 as the formal guest of Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schussel to attend the International Inter-Religion Conference on Islam in a Pluralistic World.

    On the occasion of the announcement of his participation in the conference last July, the Ecumenical Patriarch had praised the efforts of the Austrian Chancellor and the Austrian government in favor of the religious freedom of Christian minorities in Turkey.

    The Ecumenical Patriarch praised the role of Mr. Schussel, who will preside over the EU in the first half of 2006, stressing that he supports in an exemplary fashion the rights of Churches and religious communities in Turkey which is an EU candidate state.

    [11] KARAMANLIS VISITS JAPAN

    Tokyo, 10 November 2005 (16:45 UTC+2)

    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis is on a four-day formal visit to Japan. Mr. Karamanlis is accompanied by his wife and will be received by Japan's Imperial Couple while he will also meet with his Japanese counterpart Junichiro Koizumi and Japanese Parliament President Yohei Kono. He will also attend a working lunch given in his honor by the Japanese Industrialists' Confederation (KEINDAREN).

    Prime Minister Karamanlis is scheduled to give interviews to Japanese mass media.

    Government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos stated that Mr. Karamanlis' visit to Japan is placed within the framework of the efforts for the further improvement of the already good relations with Japan and is aimed at Greece's promotion in a very large market.

    [12] TURKISH NATIONALISTS OUTSIDE THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATE

    Istanbul, 10 November 2005 (14:15 UTC+2)

    A group of Turkish nationalists calling for the removal of the Ecumenical Patriarchate from Turkey returned to the Fener in Istanbul today repeating a protest event that took place about two weeks ago.

    This time, about 150 individuals gathered outside the Patriarchate chanting slogans in favor of the Patriarchate's relocation in Greece before finally dispersing.

    Strong police forces were in the region as the protest had been announced in advance in nationalist press.
