[01] VIGILANCE AT ALL LEVELS

Tests conducted in Romania have proved the existence of bird flu cases in the country announced the European Commission last night while today it will ban all imports of live birds and all poultry products coming from Romania.

All measures have been taken and so far there is no indication of a bird flu case, stated Agriculture Minister Evangelos Basiakos after a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and held with the participation of Health Minister Nikitas Kaklamanis.

Mr. Kaklamanis announced a number of Greek initiatives concerning the Balkan and the Black Sea countries.

We are the gateway for migratory birds and we are interested in sharing common actions with the region's countries, stated Mr. Kaklamanis, who assured that there is a relevant provision dealing with similar phenomena in the Perseus emergency plan.

[02] PAPANDREOU TO MEET WITH ERDOGAN AND GUL

A European Socialist Party delegation headed by main Greek opposition Socialist Party PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou and former Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Liponen meets in Ankara with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul.

Religious freedom is a fundamental issue in the European Union, stated Mr. Liponen after the meeting the delegation had with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew while Mr. Papandreou stressed that the problems of the Ecumenical Patriarchate concern Europe as a whole.

The Ecumenical Patriarch appeared optimistic that there will be good news on the Theology School within the new framework of the Euro-Turkish relations.

[03] THE DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER ON THE FYROM NAME ISSUE DEVELOPMENTS

Deputy Foreign Minister Evripidis Stilianidis speaking to ANA on the developments concerning the FYROM name issue stressed that Greece supports FYROM's Euro-Atlantic orientation under the strict term that it will abandon the intransigent position and adhere to the reasoning of a mutually acceptable solution.

In a different case, we have drawn a deep red line we are determined not to pass. At the end of the negotiating process between FYROM and the EU Greece can resort to a referendum, a legitimate institutional weapon which Greece does not intend to abandon, stated Mr. Stilianidis.

We hope and make every effort so that in the following period of time the neighboring country will display, as Greece did, a tangible spirit of conciliation and goodwill, for the issue to be settled and a new era of stability and cooperation be launched in the region, said Mr. Stilianidis.

The Deputy Foreign Minister criticized the policy followed by the PASOK governments by saying that after a long period of inaction and dead ends we were led to about 100 unilateral recognitions of FYROM to which the reaction of the PASOK government could be characterized as non-existent.

[04] GREEK HERBAL EXTRACTS HELP IN CANCER PREVENTION

There is scientific proof that mountain grown tea, chamomile, anise, strawberries, honey and royal jelly help in the prevention of cancer especially, breast cancer and osteoporosis.

This was proved through scientific research conducted on cells concerning the biological action of Greek herbal extracts and substances derived from them. The research is conducted by Athens Medical School Biochemistry Laboratory in cooperation with the Pharmacology Department funded by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology.

It is the first time ever that the biological effects of the Greek flora on the human body are being studied on a scientific basis, stated to ANA-MPA associate professor Paraskevi Moutsatsou on the sidelines of the 1st European Conference on Forests, Trees-Green Spaces and Human Health and Wellbeing that opened in Thessaloniki and will be completed on Saturday.

The substances found in herbal extracts can be used to make medicines or enrich food, explained Mrs. Moutsatsou adding that these are the so-called bio-functional foods like, yogurt with honey.

However, she stressed that people should be aware of the fact that herbal medical preparations should be administered based on specific dosage because over consumption could have negative results.

Until today, stated Mrs. Moutsatsou the Greek flora was not sufficiently studied while, on the other hand, many studies have been published on the flora found in other countries. Through the specific research, once again the importance of a balanced diet with Greek flora products is being highlighted.

Today it is established that people can benefit greatly by drinking, for example, two cups of tea every day, she stressed.

[05] HISTORIC GREEK CHURCH IN BUDAPEST TO BE CLAIMED BACK THROUGH THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

The Ecumenical Patriarchate Exarchate of Hungary and Middle Europe will make an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to win the return under its jurisdiction of the historic Greek church of the Dormition in Budapest.

The church inaugurated by the Greeks in Budapest on August 15, 1790 came under the Russian Church jurisdiction with the tolerance of the Hungarian authorities after the arrival of the Red Army in Budapest. Its construction cost 110,000 gold coins donated by Sophia Lyka and Alexandros Leporas from Moschopolis and other Macedonians and Koutsovlachs, while scholar Georgios Zaviras from Siatista left his great private library to the church.

Metropolitan Bishop of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Middle Europe, Michael stated to ANA-MPA during his visit to Thessaloniki that these efforts made in coordination with the Greek government concern the Greek cultural heritage and the rights of the Greeks in Budapest.

He stated that through the forced abolition of the historical community of Budapest after the end of WWII the church was taken away from the Ecumenical Patriarchate's jurisdiction.

After the fall of the Communist regime and the election of Michael to the post of the Metropolitan Bishop of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Middle Europe in 1991, all efforts made for the issue to be peacefully settled between the Churches of Constantinople and Russia failed in spite of the fact that the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban made great offers to the Russians to persuade them to return the church.

[06] NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS' WORK TRAVELS ALL OVER THE WORLD

The work of world-famous Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis travels all over the world, from Australia and New Zealand to South Africa, from Latin America deep into Asia and from Europe to the Pacific Ocean, through the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis founded in Geneva in 1988.

Coordinating Committee chairman Giorgos Stasinakis has organized many events in over 70 countries and just a few days ago he traveled to Cuba and Bahrain to present the work of the great Greek writer.

In statements made to ANA-MPA, Mr. Stasinakis stressed that he was impressed with the participation of young people in the events organized for the promotion of the work and thoughts of the great Cretan writer, Nikos Kazantzakis. He also said that he was emotionally moved by the love expressed by people of different ages and different cultures to the work of Kazantzakis.

The International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis has national branches all over the world and its members come from 94 countries. Since it was founded it is engaged in organizing events, conferences and seminars as well as literary competitions while it also publishes the biannual French-speaking journal Le Regard Cretois.

Mr. Stasinakis is a permanent Geneva resident. He studied Law and Political Science in France and served as a senior executive at the European Organization for Nuclear Research while he was also an assistant dean at the Geneva University Law School.

[07] CERTAINTY WITH SERIOUS PROBLEMS

FYROM deputy Prime Minister Radmila Shekerinska, responsible for European affairs, expressed certainty that the European Commission response on FYROM's European course expected to be issued on November 9 will be positive.

Mrs. Shekerinska stated that the Greek statement on a likely No to her country's participation in the European integration is a serious problem both for her country, the EU and the whole region in general.

[08] HANC CONGRATULATES THE GREEK GOVERNMENT FOR ITS STANCE ON THE NEW NIMETZ PROPOSALS

The Hellenic American National Council, HANC, in a statement signed by its chairman Theodor Spyropoulos, congratulates the Greek government for its stance on the new Nimetz proposals on the FYROM name which has rejected as unacceptable.

HANC stresses, among others, that these proposals are an insult to national rights, the Greeks all over the world, and our ancestors and falsify world history.

The Greek Americans will not allow the ratification of an agreement based on which the term Macedonia will be included in the future name of FYROM. The recent developments, is mentioned in the statement, make vigilance and immediate mobilization of all our forces imperative.

[09] THE PAN-MACEDONIAN ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA ON THE FYROM NAME ISSUE

The Pan-Macedonian Association of America, on the occasion of the new Nimetz proposals on the FYROM name, presented again its firm demands while expressing support to the laborious and sincere efforts made by the Greek government and the international institutions aimed at reaching a mutually acceptable solution to the complex issue -as a result of a series of past mistakes- of the final name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Pointing out that it has the support of the organized Greek Americans, the Pan-Macedonian of America calls for the strict implementation of the 1992 Political Party Leaders Agreement. It also suggests that representatives of the Pan-Macedonian Associations and other Greek American institutions be invited to attend a future meeting of the Greek Political Party Leaders on the issue of the FYROM name.

The Pan-Macedonian Association of America also stresses that a final agreement with Skopje on the FYROM name should be approved by the Greek people through a referendum and ratified by the Greeks living abroad.
