[01] CLARIFICATIONS BY GIANNAKOU ON THE "NON VISIT"

Greece's lasting and multifaceted support to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem is known and proven, mentions in a statement Minister of Education and Religion Marietta Giannakou in response to an earlier statement issued by the Patriarchate expressing Patriarch Irenaeus' discontent for the decision by Mrs. Giannakou not to visit the Patriarchate during her visit to Jerusalem on the occasion of the inauguration of the Holocaust Monument.

Minister of Education and Religion associates have stated that no visit to the Patriarchate was included in the Minister's schedule.

[02] HEALTH ON THE AGENDA

Greece was unable to have a health system the society demands and deserves, stated Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis speaking in Parliament today.

Mr. Karamanlis referred to the government principles on the sector of health while on his part, main opposition Socialist Party of PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou accused the government of placing the sector within partisan lines.

Earlier, the articles of the draft law on the new structure of the National Health System were passed in Parliament.

[03] MILLIONS OF EUROS RAISED BY GREEK STUDENTS FOR THE TSUNAMI VICTIMS

Minister of Education and Religion Marietta Giannakou delivered a total of 3,476,314 euros to Foreign Minister Petros Moliviatis this morning.

Students and teachers across Greece raised the sum to assist the people hit by the killer tsunami in SE Asia.

Mrs. Giannakou thanked the students and their teachers for the initiative while delivering the check to the Foreign Minister.

[04] THE GOV'T SPOKESMAN ON THE KARAMANLIS-ERDOGAN MEETING

All issues concerning the two countries will be discussed in the meeting Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis will have with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Brussels on Monday evening according to a statement made by government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos.

Regarding the proposal made by European Commission President Barroso to Mr. Erdogan for a tripartite meeting on the Cyprus issue, Mr. Rousopoulos observed that the Greek government positions on the process followed for the solution of the Cyprus problem are known and are the same with the proposals made by Cypriot Republic President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Commenting on the question whether the Greek government was aware of the Papadopoulos proposal calling for the activation of an initiative by the UN Secretary General for the solution of the Cyprus problem, he gave a positive response and refused to comment on a number of secondary preconditions allegedly set by the Cypriot Republic President.

[05] ROUSOPOULOS ON THE PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM STATEMENTS

Government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos referred to the statements made by Minister of Education and Religion Marietta Giannakou when asked to comment on the attack launched by the Patriarch of Jerusalem against the Minister because she did not visit the Patriarchate when she went to Jerusalem.

The government spokesman just added that when the issue with the Patriarchate arose the government had sent Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Skandalakis to Jerusalem to state its support.

[06] GREEK PARLIAMENT DEPUTIES WALKED OUT OF A FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

The Greek football team made up of Parliament deputies walked out of an inter-Balkan football tournament in Turkey because FYROM, also participating in the tournament, used the name Macedonia.

The Greek Parliament deputies left when the initial agreement providing that the teams would participate under the names of their state capitals was not observed.

The tournament, in which participated a total of 7 countries, will continue.
