  • [01] TRANSPARENCY WITH CONSENSUS

    The establishment of an inquiry committee to investigate the defense spending of the past few years is being decided today by the Parliament.

    Head of the 24-member committee will be Parliament vice-president Ioannis Tragakis, while 9 Parliament deputies, among them, Evangelos Venizelos will represent opposition party of PASOK. The Communist Party and Coalition of the Left each will have one deputy in the committee.

    Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis speaking in the International Herald Tribune symposium stressed the need to implement regulations promoting transparency in the broader public sector, while government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos stated that the issue of corruption for the government is an issue of institutions and not individuals.

    PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou stated that he is ready to support the proposals of the Prime Minister aimed at creating an institutional shield for political life.

    [02] EUROSTAT IN ATHENS

    A Eurostat delegation is on a short visit to Athens today to cooperate with the Greek National Statistics Agency and examine the way in which economic figures were registered in the period 2000-2003 and the 1997-1999 deficits.

    According to information, the Eurostat experts will depart for Brussels tomorrow.

    For the record, Eurostat found a deficit of 8,7 billion euros stemming from defense spending not included in the 1997-2003 state budgets.

    [03] PRESIDENT STEPHANOPOULOS' VISIT TO BULGARIA

    Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos is on a three-day formal visit to Bulgaria where he arrived yesterday.

    Mr. Stephanopoulos will meet in Sofia today with Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg Gotha, while earlier he will inaugurate a business forum in the presence of Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.

    The Greek President will also meet today with Patriarch Maximos of All Bulgaria.

    Tomorrow, Mr. Stephanopoulos will visit Varna and later in the afternoon he will return to Athens.

    [04] PAPALIGOURAS ON THE 17N INMATES ON HUNGER STRIKE

    Justice Minister Anastasis Papaligouras commented on the terrorist group 17 November inmates who are on a hunger strike.

    Mr. Papaligouras stated that they attempt to impose their terms on the Greek state. He added that interventions were made at the initiative of the Justice Ministry for the improvement of their living conditions inside the prison within the framework of the necessary security.

    [05] GREEK AIRSPACE VIOLATIONS BY TURKISH JETS

    Athens, 12 October 2004 (17:49 UTC+2)

    Turkish fighter jets violated the Greek National Airspace today in the wider region of central Aegean.

    According to the National Defense General Staff, 5 formations made up of 12 F16 Turkish Air Force aircraft violated the Greek National Airspace in 14 occasions in the wider region of central Aegean and once over the island of Antipsara at an altitude of 5,000 feet.

    The Turkish jets were armed in 4 instances and were all intercepted by Greek aircraft while 4 dogfights took place.

    [06] THE GREEK DEFENSE MINISTER IN THE NATO DEFENSE MINISTERS' SUMMIT

    Minister of Defense Spilios Spiliotopoulos will attend the NATO Defense Ministers informal summit to be held in the Romanian city of Pojana Brasov on October 13-14.

    In the summit will be examined issues of joint defense policy, security issues, ways to combat international terrorism, military training, peacekeeping missions as well as, the operational capabilities of the alliance.

    They will also discuss the future of NATO's current missions and specifically, its presence in Afghanistan, security in the Kosovo elections and training of forces in Iraq.

    [07] LOSSES IN THE ASE

    Athens, 12 October 2004 (17:10 UTC+2)

    Losses were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index dropped to -0.47% at 2399.38 points, while the volume of transactions was small at 74,1 million euros.

    Of the stocks trading today, 56 had gains and 226 had losses, while the value of 124 stocks remained unchanged.

    [08] THE ACTING GOV'T SPOKESMAN ON THE ELECTION OF THE NEW PRESIDENT

    No one can disagree with the general and therefore, generally acceptable statement made by opposition party of PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou that the new Hellenic Republic President should be progressive and democratic and express modern Greece, stated acting government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros.

    He added that the government had no contacts with the rest of the political parties on the issue of the election of the new Hellenic Republic President reiterating that any such discussion is premature.

    [09] GREEK-BULGARIAN BUSINESS FORUM IN SOFIA

    A Greek-Bulgarian Business Forum on the prospects of the economic and trade cooperation between Greece and Bulgaria took place in Sofia today co-organized by the Bulgarian Commerce and Industry Chamber and the Greek embassy Commercial Affairs Office.

    The forum inaugurated Presidents of Greece and Bulgaria, Kostis Stephanopoulos and Georgi Parvanov, who backed the intensification of bilateral economic and business relations.
