  • [01] MAGICAL OLYMPIC GAMES

    The Olympic Games in Athens will be magical, stated yesterday International Olympic Committee, IOC, President Jacques Rogge, upon his arrival in Athens. Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis received Mr. Rogge and present in the meeting were deputy Culture Minister Fani Palli-Petralia and Athens 2004 Organizing Committee President Yianna Angelopoulou-Daskalakis.

    An appeal to all nations to end all hostilities during the Olympic Games in Athens was issued by UN General Assembly President Julian Hunte. If we are able to have peace for 16 days then maybe we could have peace for ever, stressed Mr. Hunte.

    The message that everything is ready for the Olympic Games was issued by the ministerial committee that met yesterday under Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis with the participation of six government ministers, Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyiannis and Athens 2004 President Yianna Angelopoulou-Daskalakis.

    [02] THESSALONIKI'S MUSEUM OF SPORTS

    The formal inauguration of the Museum of Sports in Thessaloniki will take place today in the presence of International Olympic Committee, IOC, President Jacques Rogge, Deputy Culture Minister Fani Palli-Petralia, Sports Deputy Minister Giorgos Orphanos and Greek Olympic Committee President Lambis Nikolaou.

    The museum covers a space of 3,500 square meters and includes over 2,000 exhibits.

    The Museum of Sports in Thessaloniki will be open for the public starting on Monday, August 9 and aspires to give a new dimension to the Olympic football tournament that will get underway in Kaftatzoglion Stadium on August 11.

    [03] THEODORAKIS IN INTENSIVE CARE

    Greek world-famous music composer Mikis Theodorakis is treated with antibiotics at Evangelismos Hospital in Athens where he was admitted yesterday with high fever and loss of consciousness.

    Initial tests showed that he suffered from an infection and he was taken to an intensive care unit.

    According to his doctors, his condition is not alarming but he must stay in intensive care for at least 2 or 3 days.

    [04] MORE MEDICAL TESTS FOR MR. PAPANDREOU

    Athens, 5 August 2004 (13:24 UTC+2)

    Opposition party of PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou undergoes more tests today to determine the results of the treatment he received and define when he will be released from Attikon Hospital.

    His doctors suggested that he should rest and get enough sleep that's why no visitors are allowed since yesterday.

    According to his doctors, Mr. Papandreou will be released from hospital possibly by Monday.

    Mr. Papandreou was admitted to the hospital last Monday with high fever caused by a lung infection.

    [05] THE GOV'T SPOKESMAN ON THE TURKISH VIOLATIONS

    The Greek government made a demarche to the Turkish side both in Athens and Ankara in protest to the Turkish violations of the Greek airspace recorded over the past few days.

    Greek government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos stated that the airspace violations recorded this year are 44% less compared to last year but the fact that they continue is not pleasant.

    Mr. Rousopoulos called on Turkey to respect its signature in support of the Olympic Truce.

    [06] MARGINAL GAINS IN THE ASE

    Marginal gains were recorded ion the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index rose to +0.04% at 2297.66 points, while the volume of transactions was small at 90.8 million euros.

    Of the stocks trading today, 146 had gains and 134 had losses, while the value of 123 stocks remained unchanged.

    [07] "ATHENS 2004" DENIES PRESS REPORTS ON ACCREDITATIONS BEING STOLEN

    The Athens 2004 Organizing Committee denied press reports on the British newspaper Daily Telegraph on allegedly stolen accreditations from an Olympic facilities parking lot.

    Athens 2004 Communication Director Michalis Zacharatos stated in today's press briefing that there has been no report on any Olympic facility entry permit being stolen nor there has been an application for an accreditation replacement. He added that nobody can enter an Olympic facility without proper accreditation even if they have an entry permit for their vehicle.

    Athens 2004 press spokesman Seraphim Kotrotsos referred to the weather conditions in the period of the games and stated that the National Weather Bureau reports that the risk of having a heatwave during that time is minimal.

    [08] HUNDREDS OF DELEGATES IN THE PRE-OLYMPIC CONFERENCE IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 5 August 2004 (16:20 UTC+2)

    The five-day pre-Olympic conference on The science of Physical Education in the centuries. Challenges in the new millennium will open in Thessaloniki tomorrow afternoon with the participation of scientists from 77 countries and 1,200 delegates.

    The conference will take place on the grounds of Thessaloniki's Aristotle University and is organized by the Physical Education and Sport Science Department and the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education. The conference has the financial support of the International Olympic Committee and UNESCO.

    The conference was established as an institution by the ICSSPE in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games and ever since it is held a week before the Olympic Games in a city of the host country other than the city organizing the games.

    [09] MORE OLYMPIC PROJECTS ARE COMPLETED

    The third traffic lane in Kakia Skala leading to Athens is expected to be ready tomorrow to be open for the traffic. The tunnels and the new part of Kakia Skala to the city of Corinth were given to traffic a week ago.

    Meanwhile, the new part of Attiki Road linking the Ring Road of Imittos with the rest road network will be given to traffic today.

    [10] GREEK VERBAL NOTE TO THE TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTRY

    Athens, 5 August 2004 (13:53 UTC+2)

    The Greek Foreign Ministry will issue a verbal note to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

    The move will be made after the violation of the Greek national airspace over the eastern Aegean island of Limnos by 2 Turkish fighter jets at noon yesterday.
