  • [01] TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PAPANDREOU AND ERDOGAN

    Governing Socialist Party of PASOK leader Giorgos Papandreou had a telephone communication with Turkish Prime Minister Rejep Tayyip Erdogan who wished him success in Sunday's parliamentary elections.

    According to information, Mr. Erdogan expressed the certainty that the good climate in bilateral relations will continue after the elections.

    Mr. Papandreou thanked Mr. Erdogan and reiterated his proposal for mutual armaments' cuts.

    [02] OUT OF OPERATION THE CHECK-IN SYSTEM AT ATHENS' INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

    The check-in system at Athens' "Eleftherios Venizelos" International Airport was temporarily out of operation at noon today and as a result hundreds of people scrimmaged round the check-in desks.

    Also, there was tension between passengers and airport employees as many passengers had tickets but were left out of the airplanes.

    [03] GAINS IN THE ASE

    Gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index rose to +0.77% at 2489.38 points, while the volume of transactions was at 242.6 million euros.

    Of the stocks trading today, 214 had gains and 84 had losses, while the value of 94 stocks remained unchanged.

    [04] THESSALONIKI AND ISTANBUL WILL BE CLOSER

    Greece and Turkey will proceed with the drawing up of a joint action program for the development of the Thessaloniki-Istanbul rail and road axis. The joint action program will be discussed and agreed upon in a special meeting of specialists in Istanbul in June 2004.

    According to the Athens newspaper Imerisia, the development of a common database, a geographic information system (GIS) and an Internet site by September 2004 were decided in the first meeting of the Managing Committee for the development of the Thessaloniki-Istanbul European Corridor.

    These are the first steps for the materialization of a relevant Cooperation Agreement signed by Greek and Turkish government ministers in Athens in January.

    [05] KARAMANLIS-ERDOGAN TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION

    Right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis had a telephone communication with Turkey's Prime Minister Rejep Tayyip Erdogan today.

    Mr. Karamanlis telephoned Mr. Erdogan who wished him good luck in the elections and said that they will speak again on Monday.

    [06] KARAMANLIS LAUNCHED A STRONG ATTACK ON PASOK

    Right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis launched a strong attack on the governing Socialist Party of PASOK speaking in his party's main political rally held in Athens this evening. Mr. Karamanlis also presented seven priorities that will be implemented if New Democracy wins the March 7 elections and forms a government.

    Mr. Karamanlis accused PASOK of trying to create phobic dilemmas during the past few days and pledged that his government will be a government of all Greeks regardless of the political party they support.

    Mr. Karamanlis stated that his priorities will be to form a capable and responsible government, more jobs, convergence of wages and pensions with the European average, support to the farmers and the small-medium sized businesses, equal rights for all citizens, solutions for the everyday problems and successful Olympic Games.

    [07] FORMER EURO-DEPUTY LAGAKOS DIED TODAY

    Former Euro-deputy Efstathios Lagakos died today at the age of 82. He served as Greece's ambassador to Cyprus and Britain, as well as Greece's permanent representative to NATO.

    The deceased resigned from the Foreign Ministry in 1983 and took over New Democracy's International Relations, while two years later he became Konstantinos Mitsotakis' diplomatic adviser.

    He was elected Euro-deputy with the party of New Democracy in June 1989 and on November 22 of the same year he was elected vice-president of the Inter-Parliamentary Delegation of the European Parliament on the EU relations with Cyprus.

    He also served as vice-president of the Political Working Group of the European People's Party Parliament Group and became a member of the Development and Cooperation Committee.
