[02] EFTHYMIOU: ND SEES DIPLOMAS AS PRODUCTS

    Athens, 1 December 2003 (12:29 UTC+2)

Minister of Education Petros Efthymiou made mention of a grand scheme on the side of New Democracy, commenting on the provision proposed by ND's EuroMP Costis Chatzidakis, which will open the way to the recognition of the diplomas of thousands of graduates of private higher education institutions.

Speaking to Flash radio, Mr. Efthymiou accused the Opposition of seeing diplomas as products and added that it scored two misses. And that, he explained, is because on the one hand it revealed a hidden program for education and on the other it placed itself against the Greek Constitution in an effort to pass the issue of diploma recognition through the Interior Market Committee.

He pointed out that if necessary he will appeal to the European Court and he stressed that it could be dealt with as a product, but as an educational system.

It should be noted that the European Parliament's legal affairs committee accepted the provision in question, which essentially recognizes diplomas issued from various private colleges throughout Europe as normal university diplomas, if those institutions are in cooperation with European universities.

The provision in question is expected to be discussed on December 17 in the Plenary of the European Parliament.

    Athens, 1 December 2003 (19:12 UTC+2)

Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and his Belgian counterpart Guy Verhofstadt in the meeting they had in Athens today shared the same views on issues concerning the European defense and the special majority issue raised in the talks on the new EU Constitution.

[10] GREEK EURO-DEPUTY ON THE VIOLATION OF THE TREATY OF LAUSANNE BY TURKEY

    Brussels, 1 December 2003 (17:20 UTC+2)

Urgent parliamentary questions to the European Commission and the EU Council of Ministers were submitted by Greek Euro-deputy Yiannis Marinos, elected with the right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy, on the occasion of the Turkish efforts to legalize the seizure of Greek property in the islands of Imvros and Tenedos, northeastern Aegean, through the drawing up of the new Turkish Land Register.

Mr. Marinos points out in his introductions to the two EU bodies that native Greeks live in the islands of Imvros and Tenedos for the past 3,000 years, while according to article 14 of the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne those islands were given to Turkey provided that they will have a special administration made up of local elements with guarantees for the native non-Muslim population regarding local administration and the protection of life and property. In the same article is mentioned that law and order will be safeguarded by a force which will be made up of members of the native population, it will be formed by the local administration and will be under its command.

The New Democracy Euro-deputy underlines, that in 1927 Imvros was populated, based on an official Turkish population census, by 7,000 Greeks and a negligible number of Turks, while Tenedos had a population of 2,500 Greeks and 1,247 Turks. Today, only 250 Greeks have been left in Imvros and a total of 9,000 Turkish settlers now live in the island. On the other hand, just 30 Greeks are left in Tenedos and the Turkish administration has proceeded to change the formal names of the two islands, which were used for thousands of years, to Gokce Ada and Bozca Ada respectively.
