[05] THE GREEK PARLIAMENT SUPPORTS MORE SCHOOLS IN UKRAINEAthens, 14 October 2003 (20:44 UTC+2)The Greek Parliament, at the initiative of its President Apostolos Kaklamanis, has undertaken since 2002 the adoption of two schools in Mariupol, Ukraine in which the Greek language is being taught. Based on a new decision by Mr. Kaklamanis five more schools, where the Greek language is also taught, will be adopted in Ukraine and will be supplied with the necessary equipment, and modern teaching devices such as PCs, copy machines, television sets, video players etc. [06] THE PRIME MINISTER ADDRESSED PASOK'S PARLIAMENTARY GROUPAthens, 14 October 2003 (19:46 UTC+2)Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, addressing the parliamentary group of the governing Socialist Party of PASOK today, responded to those who had characterized as pre-election announcements the Convergence Charter, the development law, and the forestland draft bill on unlicensed constructions. The Prime Minister underlined that all of the above are the results of the policy followed by the government which will continue its program with new draft laws, such as those on water resources and municipalities' election spending. According to Mr. Simitis, the government's intention is to make its work evident in regional areas. Mr. Simitis characterized as insulting the use of the term regime by the right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy and stressed that Greece has democratic procedures and PASOK was the winner of the last elections and still has the people's mandate. He launched an attack on ND on the occasion of the visits made by its leader Kostas Karamanlis to former Soviet Union states reminding that ND had made accusations of election fraud during the past elections involving repatriated Greeks and Greeks living abroad. He also said that ND is represented in Parliament by deputies who represent major businesses and businesses associated with politics. On the leading members of PASOK, he said that there is renewal in terms of individuals and policies and underlined that modernization and reform constitute a standing procedure. [07] THE GOV'T SPOKESMAN ON THE VANDALISMS AT THE JEWISH CEMETERY OF IOANNINAAthens, 14 October 2003 (18:25 UTC+2)The government condemns in the most categorical way the vandalisms that took place at the Jewish cemetery in the city of Ioannina, northwestern Greece, stated Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas. He stressed that the phenomena of vandalism in cemeteries as well as, phenomena of disrespect and desecration of the dead are contemptible. Mr. Protopapas added that an investigation will be held and those responsible will be led to justice. Responding to questions on the visits of US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul to Athens next week, Mr. Protopapas stated that there will be no joint meeting of the US, Greek and Turkish sides, adding that Mr. Gul's visit simply coincided with Mr. Powell's. [09] THE GOV'T SPOKESMAN ON IRAQAthens, 14 October 2003 (17:29 UTC+2)The European Union has decided to offer economic assistance to help the Iraqi people deal with the immediate problems they face, while the likelihood of a special Greek participation in the effort is being considered, stated Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas. Mr. Protopapas also stressed that the United Nations should undertake Iraq's reconstruction before such a discussion is held. [10] MARGINAL GAINS IN THE ASEAthens, 14 October 2003 (17:19 UTC+2)Marginal gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index rose to +0.10% at 2.114,75 points, while the volume of transactions exploded just before the end of the session reaching 548.9 million euros. Of the stocks trading today, 181 recorded losses and 103 had gains, while the value of 100 stocks remained unchanged. [11] THE SIAMESE TWINS FROM THESSALONIKI LEAVE THE IC UNITThessaloniki, 14 October 2003 (17:16 UTC+2)The Siamese twins from Thessaloniki will leave the intensive care unit today after the long surgery they underwent for their separation at a Rome hospital two days ago. The neurosurgeon, who performed the operation, stated in a press conference today that he is very satisfied with the way the health condition of the two baby-girls is developing. The doctor referred to all the technical details of the surgery and maintained that the operation was a difficult one as the girls were joined at the temple area. The only reservation expressed by the doctor was over the likelihood for the two girls to face vision problems. [12] GUSINSKY WILL NOT BE EXTRADITED TO RUSSIAAthens, 14 October 2003 (17:10 UTC+2)The Council of Court of Appeals Judges in Athens ruled today against the extradition of Russian tycoon Vladimir Gusinsky to Russia. It ruled that the offenses, on which the extradition request by the Russian authorities was based, are not substantiated. Vladimir Gusinsky is now free and the 100,000euro bail he posted for his release from Koridallos Prison a month ago will be returned to him. [13] CRITICAL HOURS FOR THE CONJOINED TWINSRome, 14 October 2003 (15:05 UTC+2)The coming days will be critical to the health of the conjoined twins from Thessaloniki, which were successfully separated after an operation that took place in Rome. The twins are in stable condition and their health is satisfactory, while both the parents and the doctors expressed their hopes that there will be no complications in the next few days. The twins were connected at the temple. [14] KARAMANLIS IN BRUSSELSBrussels, 14 October 2003 (15:05 UTC+2)President of New Democracy Costas Karamanlis is traveling to Brussels today, in order to participate in the meeting of the European Peoples' Party as its Vice President. Mr. Karamanlis will bear the message of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that his party, the Party of Justice and Development, be added to the ranks of the EPP- to the meeting. This request was expressed during Mr. Karamanlis' recent visit to Turkey, where he spoke at the meeting of the Justice and Development Party, and where he met with Mr. Erdogan as Vice President of the EPP.
