[01] SIMITIS-PAPANDREOU MEETING

An evaluation of the course of the Greek Presidency and developments in Greek Turkish relations, the Cyprus issue, and the Middle East was carried out by Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou, during their meeting last night in the Maximos Mansion.

Mr. Papandreou referred to the travel of citizens in Cyprus, stating that it was the result of the momentum that has been formed in the island's society, which, he said, does not want to know of walls.

After the end of the meeting, the Foreign Minister said that there had been a review of Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue, and that issues related to the Greek Presidency, which are at center of the Prime Minister's tour of Union capitals, were thoroughly looked into.

Regarding developments in Cyprus, he stated that the opening of the green line was a result of the momentum that has been formed around Europe, which, he underlined does not recognize the walls dividing its member-states. The people of Cyprus want their wall to be torn down, mentioned Mr. Papandreou characteristically, stressing that the momentum is affecting the attitude of the people towards the reunification of the island.

Mr. Papandreou greeted the developments noted on Wednesday regarding the Palestinian issue, with the decision made for a new Palestinian Authority Cabinet, and expressed his hope that the Palestinian Parliament approves this formation.

This will allow the path for the application of the roadmap, aiming at re-founding the Palestinian state by 2005, to be reopened, said Mr. Papandreou, who said that he may visit Israel and the Palestinian territories within the next few weeks, if the positive developments are confirmed.
