Minister of the Interior, Public Administration and Decentralization, Kostas Scandalidis, was completely satisfied with the way the elections were carried out today. We dared and we succeeded. Tomorrow will be a better day for everyone, stated the Minister.

Shortly before the ballot boxes closed, Mr. Scandalidis stated: The winners of the elections will reinforce the present and future of local government. Both in the first and second degree. But for us the elections had three degrees. Along with the municipalities and the prefectures, the first step of a major reform was also being judged. We dared and we succeeded. Tomorrow will be a better day for us all, mainly for the prospect of a decentralized, modern and democratic state. A state that Greece of the 21st century deserves, the Greece of prosperity, growth and progress.

[02] BAKOYANNI - GENNIMATA JOY FOR EXIT POLLS

A message of love and unity to all was sent by candidate Athens mayor, Dora Bakoyanni, shortly after the announcement of the Kapa Research exit polls, according to which she concentrated between 57.5% and 60.5% in the Municipality of Athens, against 39.5%-42.5% for Christos Papoutsis.

We won in the capital of Greece. We won in our Athens. I thank you all, for fighting with me for so many months, stated Mrs. Bakoyanni, who added: Athens will be united tomorrow. Athens will be strong. Athens will send a message of love and unity to all.

Candidate prefect of the Athens-Piraeus prefecture Fofi Gennimata, thanked all those who supported her, after the announcement of the exit polls, which give her between 53.5% and 55.5% against 44.5%-46.5% for Giannis Tzannetakos. At the same time, she condemned New Democracy's campaign strategy, saying, We got the message. To succeed, only three things are necessary: Work, work and work, and we intend to work.

Beginning tomorrow, we extend our hand to all those who voted for us, to all those who trusted us, a great thank you from our hearts, as well as to all the citizens of the Prefecture, because we must all be united tomorrow.

[03] THE FIRST EXIT POLLS KAPA RESSEARCH

Fofi Gennimata and Dora Bakoyanni are expected to correspondingly win in the Athens-Piraeus Prefecture and the Municipality of Athens, with a significant margin from their opponents, according to the first exit polls, announced by Kapa Research, shortly after the ballot boxes for the local government elections closed at 7pm.

Prefecture of Athens-Piraeus

Fofi Gennimata, who concentrated 40.1% in the first round, against 26.7% of Giannis Tzannetakos, increased her lead to 53.5-55.5%, against 44.5-46.5% concentrated by Giannis Tzannetakos.

Municipality of Athens

Dora Bakoyanni, who concentrated 47.4% in the first round, seems to have concentrated between 57.5% and 60.5%. On his side, Christos Papoutsis, who concentrated 26% in the first round, is expected to concentrate between 39.5% and 42.5%.

Municipality of Piraeus

Christos Arapidis who concentrated 47% in the first round, is expected to concentrate between 54% and 56.5%, while Manolis Bedeniotis, is expected to concentrate between 43.5% and 46% (after having concentrated 31.1% in the first round).

Prefecture of Achaia

Mr. Katsikopoulos concentrated 49.1% in the first round, and increased his percentage to 57-60%, while Mr. Bekiris increased his percentage from 35.5% in the first round, to between 40-43%.

Municipality of Patras

Former Mayor supported by PASOK A. Karavolas, who concentrated 38.2% in the first round, is now expected to receive between 50.5% and 53.5%. ND supported present Mayor of Patras, E. Floratos who received 39.4% in the first round, is expected to concentrate between 46.5% and 49.5%.

[04] PARTY LEADERS ON SECOND ROUND

Prime Minister Kostas Simitis referred to the local character of municipal and prefecture elections this morning, immediately after voting. The elections are being completed today, steadily and successfully. Today we are voting for a local government plan that responds to the goals of the people. For mayors and prefects who have a vision of progress, development and social cohesion for their prefectures and municipalities. Beginning tomorrow, we move forward both for local government and for our countries major problems, stated the Prime Minister.

President of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis did not vote today, because he was supposed to vote in Thessaloniki, where both the Prefect and the Mayor were elected in the first round.

Nonetheless, the Head of the Opposition made the following statement: Today, we are evaluating individuals. We are evaluating all those who want and can provide solutions to problems that downgrade the lives of the people.

The future of local government, the future of every local society, the future of our country, depends on each and every one of us. Every vote carries power with it. We are joining out forces, our voices, our common goals.

Secretary General of the Greek Communist Party (KKE) Aleka Papariga, stated that tomorrow we will be back on the front of the struggles within the cities, shortly after casting her vote for the local government elections.

She also underlined that the KKE will consistently and transparently continue to fight against the interests of the few, wealth and the imperialist world order.

President of the Coalition of the Left, Nikos Konstantopoulos, referred to the work of mayors and prefects for the coming 4 years, to cope with the structural shortcomings of local government and the problems of the people.

Mayors and prefects and local government councils to be elected, must fight for the structural shortcomings of local government, the serious problems that make living in cities and unbearable and living in the country out of sync, the major needs for quality of life in our daily lives.

President of DIKKI Dimitris Tsovolas castigated the tactics of the two major parties in the pre-election period, stressing that personal confrontations do not promote democracy, and obviously do not promote the interests of our country, or local government.

At last, politics must come back into the foreground, and replace the commercialization of politics and the people, he stated characteristically.
