[01] "ALEXANDER THE GREAT" SQUARE IN KABULThessaloniki, 25 May 2002 (18:41 UTC+2)A square at the center of the Afghan capital of Kabul was named after Alexander the Great in a show of gratitude to the Greek peacekeeping force deployed in the country, which has undertaken to destroy landmines and repair city streets and schools. According to a news report on the Athens newspaper "Ethnos", the two schools that were rebuilt had been destroyed by the air strikes and the everyday work of the Greek peacekeeping force included the construction of an ammunition warehouse, destruction of landmines, repair of the road and electricity supply infrastructure and medical care. [05] THE GREEK ARMED FORCES MOBILIZATION HAS BEEN LIFTEDAthens, 25 May 2002 (17:57 UTC+2)The Council of Defense that met yesterday, chaired by Minister of Defense Yiannos Papantoniou, decided to lift the armed forces mobilization that was in effect in Greece for the past 28 years. The Presidential Decree in question was put into effect on July 20, 1974 right after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. In statements he made to reporters, Mr. Mitsotakis stated that he hopes that everything will go well, stressing that the operation he will undergo is a routine one. Mr.Mitsotakis left for the United States accompanied by his son, Kiriakos and his daughter, Katerina, while his daughter and ND parliament deputy Dora Bakoyiannis will depart for Phoenix on Monday. Mr. Mitsotakis is expected to return to Greece on June 3. [07] GREEK-ROMANIAN MILITARY COOPERATIONAthens, 25 May 2002 (17:48 UTC+2)The Greek and Romanian Undersecretaries of Defense signed an agreement in Athens for a five-year bilateral military cooperation. The agreement provides for the exchange of views on defense policy and security issues, and defense technology and cooperation in the sector of personnel training. A Greek-Romanian military committee has undertaken to materialize the agreement and will meet annually in Greece and Romania by turns.
