    [02] BARTHOLOMEW MEETS IRANIAN PRESIDENT

    Tehran, 14 January 2002 (13:30 UTC+2)

The President of Iran met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew yesterday, in the framework of Mr. Bartholomew's visit to Iran, which started on Friday.

Mr. Bartholomew is the first religious leader to visit Iran after the 1979 revolution, and he characterized his meeting with the Iranian leader as heartfelt and very human. The two men agreed that interreligious discussion is necessary.

We are open to this discussion, as we have always been open to all discussions. We have nothing to fear, we love people, stressed Mr. Bartholomew. Furthermore, he praised the efforts made by Mr. Hatami on changing and reincorporating, and he characterized him as a pioneer of dialogue.

Yesterday morning, Holy Mass was performed by Mr. Bartholomew in the Greek Orthodox church of the annunciation, in the presence of the few members of the Greek Orthodox community of Tehran. The church was built 52 years ago, but only functions twice a year because there is no priest.

The four-day visit of the Ecumenical Patriarch to Iran, is taking place 3 weeks after the interreligious meeting at Brussels, and is especially important since it is expected to contribute to the better acquainting and cooperation among monotheistic religions.

During a meeting he had with the delegation of the Center for Interreligious Discussion, Mr. Bartholomew invited the President of the Organization for Culture and the Islamic Arts, Mohamed Aragi, to Fanari, who reserved his answer.

It should be noted that Iran is the second Muslim country after Bahrain, to invite and welcome Mr. Bartholomew. Today, the Ecumenical Patriarch will meet with the leader of the Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Homeini.

    Athens, 14 January 2002 (18:37 UTC+2)

The editor of the list is deplorable regardless of who he is, stated Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas, referring to the list of names, among them government ministers and parliament deputies, allegedly involved in terrorism.

Mr. Protopapas stated that the government works hard and in a systematic way to combat terrorism and the stories, that circulate on the issue, are not helpful.

When he was asked on whether the government has evidence in its possession that make it optimistic that terrorism will be eradicated, the government spokesman stressed that the government gets its optimism from the serious work it does.
