    The picture is unclear concerning the number of the Greek-Americans, who were killed or are still missing after last Tuesday's terrorist attack in New York. America-World Council for Hellenes Abroad, SAE, president Chris Tomaras believes that there are 24 dead and 120 missing Greek-Americans.

    Also, among the passengers of the American Airlines plane that crashed into the first of the Twin Towers was a Greek-American, 32-year-old Michael Theodoridis, an adviser with a big company in Boston.

    According to the Greek consulate in New York, officially there are two Greek-Americans missing, Ioanna Achladiotis, 27, and John Katsimatidis, who were both working for an investment firm which had offices at the 101-105 floors of the WTC.

    [02] THE FUNERAL OF STELIOS KAZANTZIDIS WILL TAKE PLACE THIS AFTERNOON

    The funeral of popular Greek singer Stelios Kazantzidis will take place in the cemetery of Elefsina, near Athens, this afternoon. Kazantzidis died yesterday morning after a long battle with cancer.

    His wife stated that she wishes no wreaths to be sent to the funeral and the money to be donated to the "Iliachtida" Foundation (an association of parents with children suffering from Down Syndrome). The donations can be deposited in the National Bank of Greece account number: 100/29605671.

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis sent a telegram of condolences to the family of Stelios Kazantzidis, while minister of culture Evangelos Venizelos, government spokesman Dimitris Reppas and right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis made a statements expressing their sorrow for the loss of the great popular artist.

    [03] "EGNATIA ODOS": GREECE'S MAIN ROAD NETWORK

    Thessaloniki, 15 September 2001 (16:58 UTC+2)

    A total of 300 kilometers of the "Egnatia Odos" road network will be ready by next summer out of the 680 kilometers which is the total length of the road network that starts from Igoumenitsa, northwestern Greece, passes through northern Greece and ends up in Evros, northeastern Greece. A total of 170 kilometers are currently open to the drivers, while other 130 kilometers will be ready by next June.

    The 1 trillion 200 billion drachmas project progresses in a very satisfactory way and by mid 2004 a total of 580 kilometers will be open to the drivers, stated "Egnatia Odos" Board of Directors vice-president professor Giorgos Penelis in an interview with MPA that was broadcast live on the Internet. He also stressed that the project will boost the economic development of northern Greece.

    "Egnatia Odos" is the revival of the ancient Egnatia Road and through 9 vertical road axes it is linked with Albania, FYROM. Bulgaria, and Turkey.

    [04] MUSEUMS WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ON SEPTEMBER 21-23

    Museums and archaeological sites in Greece will be open to the public on September 21-23 within the framework of the "European Cultural Heritage Days - 2001" events.

    In a press conference culture minister Evangelos Venizelos stated that a number of events will take place that will have scientific and social character.

    The European Cultural Heritage Days institution is in effect in Greece since 1994 and last year more than 110.000 people visited the country's museums during the event.

    [05] GREEK-TURKISH DISASTER MANAGEMENT UNIT

    Procedural and technical issues for the establishment of a joint Greek-Turkish Disaster Management Unit were discussed in a meeting a Greek delegation headed by Civil Protection general secretary professor Dimitris Papanikolaou had a few days ago with a Turkish delegation headed by ambassador Ertugrul Apakan.

    The initiative for the establishment of a joint unit is a Greek-Turkish proposal that was approved by the UN plenary session after the devastating earthquakes that hit both countries in 1999.

    In the meeting that was held in Athens in the presence of a UN Humanitarian Affairs Coordination Office representative were also discussed other issues of cooperation between the two countries in the case of natural disaster.

    [06] A NEW DEMOCRACY DELEGATION WILL BE AT THESSALONIKI'S ITF TODAY

    A right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy delegation will be in Thessaloniki's 66th International Trade Fair today as the visit of party leader Kostas Karamanlis has been postponed to take place on September 29-30 given the fact that he is still in the United States as it is impossible for him to leave due to the fact that the airports are still closed as a result of last Tuesday's terrorist attack.

    The delegation is made up of central committee secretary Vangelis Meimarakis, parliament deputies Dora Bakoyiannis, Giorgos Alogoskoufis, Nikitas Kaklamanis and other officials.

    [07] PRESIDENT STEPHANOPOULOS WILL ATTEND THE ENTHRONEMENT OF PATRIARCH IRINEOS

    Jerusalem, 15 September 2001 (16:39 UTC+2)

    The enthronement of Patriarch Irineos of Jerusalem will place today in the presence of Greek president Kostis Stephanopoulos.

    The ceremony will be attended by foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou, a parliamentary committee and Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All of Greece.
