  • [01] GREEK COMMANDER IN THE MULTINATIONAL FORCE IN SE EUROPE

    Greece took over yesterday the rotating command of the multinational peacekeeping force in southeastern Europe that was formed in 1998 to participate in peacekeeping missions in the region.

    In a special ceremony, that was held in the force's headquarters in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, its command was handed over to Greek general Andreas Kouzelis replacing Turkish general Hilmi Zorlu. The Greek government was represented in the ceremony by undersecretary of defense Mr. Apostolakis.

    In the multinational force of southeastern Europe, which is made up of 2.000-3.000 troops, participate Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Italy, Romania, FYROM, and Albania.

    [02] THE OLYMPIC GAMES GENERAL SECRETARY IN TUNIS

    Athens 2004 Olympic Games general secretary Kostas Kartalis will be in Tunis on the occasion of the Mediterranean Games. Also, Mr. Kartalis will represent the Greek culture ministry in the informal meeting of the Mediterranean ministries of culture, sports and youth that opened in Tunis today and will be completed on September 3.

    In the meeting will participate representatives from 23 Mediterranean countries to discuss the Mediterranean Cooperation framework in the triptych "Culture-Sports-Education".

    The Greek side has already proposed initiatives within the framework of the triptych mentioned before, focusing on the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. The meeting will end on Monday, September 3 with a joint statement issued by the Mediterranean ministers.

    [03] UB40 WILL BE IN THESSALONIKI ON TUESDAY

    The British reggae music group UB40 will be in Thessaloniki on Tuesday, September 4 for a concert within the framework of its world tour, called "The cover tour".

    Coming from England's west midlands, the UB40 is the No1 reggae group in Britain and enjoys its third decade of a world success with many hit records that got to the top place of the European charts.

    They have sold over 50 million albums around the world and made reggae music very popular. Their new work, called "Cover up" is expected to be at the stores in the next few days and includes ballads, upbeat dance tracks and a song on AIDS in Africa they wrote on behalf of the UN.

    [04] PASOK SHOULD FORM A POLITICAL PROPOSAL THAT WILL LEAD TO VICTORY

    The need for the governing socialist party of PASOK to unite in view of its congress in order to overturn the unfavorable climate created lately in society, was pointed out by minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos speaking today in the second day of the proceedings of PASOK's Central Committee meeting in Athens.

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos stated that the party congress should be a field for dialogue in stead of conflict and confrontation, as it is necessary for the party to form a new political proposal which in essence will be a victory strategy.

    Meanwhile, Mr. Tsochatzopoulos is scheduled to speak later today in the round-table discussion on The Future of the EU held by the European Socialist Party in the Italian city of Reggio.

    Among the round-table discussion participants will be European Socialist Party president and former British foreign minister Robin Cook, former Italian prime minister Mr. Amato and head of the European Socialist Party parliamentary group in the Euro-parliament Enrique Baron Crespo

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos will also attend the European Socialist Party presiding board meeting that will be held tomorrow.

    [05] THE GREEK NATIONAL BASKETBALL TEAM BEAT ITALY 83-82

    Antalia, 1 September 2001 (17:01 UTC+2)

    The Greek national basketball team beat Italy 83-82 in the opening game of the Euro-Basket 2001 taking place in Antalia, Turkey.

    The Greek team won just before the end of the game with a three-pointer by Frangiskos Alvertis.

    Coach Kostas Petropoulos stated that it was a big victory and a great achievement adding, however, that mistakes were made during the game but what matters now is that the Greek national team is the winner.

    Tomorrow, the Greeks will play against the Russian team.

    [06] SKANDALAKIS: SAE'S "HIPPOCRATES" IS A FULLY EQUIPPED MEDICAL CENTER

    Tblisi, 1 September 2001 (17:07 UTC+2)

    "Hippocrates" is a fully equipped medical center and the fact that it is in operation is a gift from the sky for the Greeks in the former soviet republic of Georgia, stated to MPA permanent special parliamentary committee on the Greeks abroad A' vice-president, Panagiotis Skandalakis.

    Mr. Skandalakis together with undersecretary of foreign affairs Grigoris Niotis and World Council for Hellenes Abroad, SAE, president Andrew Athens visited SAE's Medical Center in Tblisi, Georgia yesterday.

    Realizing the increased needs in the region, Mr. Skandalakis offered to help in the supply of the medical center with new equipment that can be offered by hospitals and private clinics in Greece to facilitate the work of the doctors. He also undertook to make a proposal to the Athens Medical School to accept annually one or two doctors from "Hippocrates" for training in Greece.
