[01] SIMITIS - KARAMANLIS RETURN

Prime Minister Kostas Simitis is returning today from his holiday in Sifnos and will spend the weekend at his summer house in Agious Theodorous, where he will study the briefs concerning the PASOK Central Committee meeting on the 31st of August and his visit to the TIF on the 6th and 7th of September. On Monday the Prime Minister will meet with the Central Committee's secretary, Kostas Skandalidis, and on Tuesday with the administration of the Industries' Association of Northern Greece.

On Sunday the president of New Democracy, Kostas Karamanlis, is returning from the isle of Ios and will prepare for his visit and speech at the 66th TIF. On Monday he will have meetings with his associates and on Tuesday he will meet with the administration of the Industries' Association of Northern Greece.

[02] TWO NEW MEDICAL CENTERS FOR GREEKS LIVING ABROAD

Two new Medical Centers in Armenia and the Ukraine will be inaugurated on August 31st and September 2nd, by the President of the Council of Greeks Living Abroad (CGLA), Andreas Athens, in the presence of the Under-secretary of Foreign Affairs, Grigoris Niotis, and the President of the World Inter-parliamentary Hellenism Union, Nikos Papadopoulos.

Mr. Athens stated the belief that the two new medical centers will reinforce the CGLA's Medical Program and added that by next year one million people will use the CGLA Medical Centers worldwide.

The creation of the medical center in Armenia is part of actions taken by the CGLA for the materialization of its program, which concerns medical care for Greeks all over the world. A spokesperson from the American Foreign Ministry will also be present at the inauguration, since the US Foreign Ministry supported this effort.

There are already two successfully functioning medical centers in Tiflida, which Mr. Athens will visit. The creation of a new medical center in Vatum is one of CGLA's targets, for the achievement of which, Mr. Athens will have meetings with the local authorities and relevant bodies in Tiflida.

Also in the framework of the medical program, on September 2nd in Marioupolis of the Ukraine, the wing of a public clinic that was donated to the CGLA will open its "gates"to Greeks living in the Ukraine.

In the meantime, the medical program of the CGLA in Albania is still under development, while the completion of the CGLA medical center in Georgoutsates of Albania is expected by the end of the year. The clinic will function under the supervision of Archbishop Anastasios and will provide free medical care to the Greek minority, but also to citizens that ask for their help.

The three medical centers in Georgia and the nurse visitation to villages program in the Ukraine, treat more than 35.000 patients monthly.

[03] GREEK COMMUNIST PARTY: NO GREEKS IN NATO MISSION

The Greek Communist Party is against the participation of Greece in the new NATO mission in FYROM. In an announcement made today they called all the citizens of Thessaloniki to gather at gate 11 of the harbor at 6pm and then to move to Polykastro in order to declare their will against the NATO invasion of the Balkans and the arrival of Greek soldiers in the region.

[04] 5 GREEK OFFICERS IN NATO FORCE

5 Greek officers are part of the first NATO force of 400 that will arrive this afternoon in Skopje. These men are the forefront of the NATO mission, which foresees the disarmament of the Albanian guerrillas.

The first to arrive today are 40 British soldiers, while the rest will arrive during the weekend.

[05] END OF HOLIDAYS FOR PASOK

For PASOK, the end of the holidays means the beginning of two months which, by the end of October, will judge much.

On the 31st of August and the 1st of September PASOK's Central Committee will approve the positions for the pre-congressional dialogue. MP's of the party will attend the session with rights of speech.

From September 2nd until September 20th the organizations in a demotic or inter-demotic plenary session will discuss the positions.

From September 21st to September 26th there will be a session on the same issues, in which all Prefectural and Sectorial Committees of the Party will take part. The same goes for the Youth Organizations of the Party.

On September 30th the members of the congress will be elected, with a uniform procedure in all the country.

On October 5th, the final draft of the Positions, with the decision of the Performing Office, along with the review of the Central Committee, will be at the disposal of the discussants.

[06] STUDENTS CALL FOR AN END TO PROFESSORS ABSTENTION

The AUTh Medical School Students are threatening to sue their professors, if they do not resume their duties, so the examinations can take place.

The university doctors have abstained their duties since June 7th and, as students support, there is a visible fear of losing a semester, while others will fail to meet deadlines for scholarships and postgraduate studies.

From the 19 university clinics existing in Greece, only 11 are working.

According to the AUTh Dean, Mihalis Papadopoulos, the disagreements between university doctors should in no way be an obstacle in the development of the students' studies, and their futures.

At the end of the month, the University Senate will come into session and the main issue will be to find a way out of the dead end the students have been put in.
