[01] GREEK PM MEETS WITH PRESIDENT CLERIDES THIS WEEKAthens, 12 November 2000 (18:35 UTC+2)Prime Minister Costas Simitis will be meetingwith Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides in Athens on Tuesday, November 14, where the latter will brief the Greek government and political parties on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and on the preparations necessary for the sixth round of proximity talks in January. According to press reports, the meeting will be held in order to assess the results of the talks and decide a joint strategy in view of the EU summit in Nice in December, which President Clerides will also attend, and the UN resolution on whether to renew the term of the UN peace-keeping force UNFICYP on Cyprus. President Clerides will be received by the President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos tomorrow, while he will also meet with main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis and ND honorary president Constantine Mitsotakis. [02] GREEK PRESIDENT TO VISIT THE CZECH REPUBLICAthens, 12 November 2000 (18:36 UTC+2)The President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos will conduct a three-day official visit to the Czech Republic, beginning on November 14, at the invitation of his Czech counterpart Vaclav Havel. This shall be the first visit by a Greek head of state since 1993, when the Czech Republic became independent. President Stephanopoulos will head a delegation of government officials, businessmen and academics, aiming to further bilateral cooperation in tourism, trade, agriculture and transport, while the further development of cooperation between Greek and Czech universities will also be on the agenda. [03] N.AEGEAN HAS HIGHEST PROPORTION OF ELDERLY IN EUBrussels, 12 November 2000 (18:38 UTC+2)The northern Aegean has the highest number of elderly people as a proportion of the working population in the European Union, according to the EU's statistics service Eursotat. Specifically, 62 out of 100 members of the working population in the region are above 65 years of age, against an EU average of 34 elderly out of 100. A.F. [04] BALKAN ART DIRECTORS TO MEET IN THESSALONIKIThessaloniki, 12 November 2000 (18:37 UTC+2)Art directors from various Balkan theaters are to meet in Thessaloniki on November 18, in order to discuss the creation of a Balkan State Theater Union. Organized by the State Theater of Northern Greece, he meeting will examine the problems and present operational state of Balkan state theaters, as well as prospects for joint productions, exchanges and information. The art directors of state theaters from Belgrade (Yugoslavia), Zagreb (Croatia), Tirana (Albania), Sofia (Bulgaria), Bucharest (Romania), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Istanbul (Turkey) will be present. [05] BALKAN RECONSTRUCTION BOARD MEETS TOMORROWThessaloniki, 12 November 2000 (18:34 UTC+2)The board of directors of the Balkan Reconstruction Organization is to convene in Thessaloniki tomorrow, November 13, its first meeting following the political changes in Yugoslavia. The meeting, is awaited with interest after the decision drawn by the European Union's General Affairs Council to expand the Organization geographically so that it will encompass all of Yugoslavia's regions. [06] GREEK MINISTERS EMBARK ON BALKAN TOUR TODAYThessaloniki, 12 November 2000 (18:33 UTC+2)The Ministers of National Economy and Finance Minister Yiannos Papantoniou and Macedonia-Thrace George Paschalides, embarked on a three-day tour of the capitals of Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and FYROM, in a drive to promote a Greek plan for the reconstruction of the Balkans. Mr. Papantoniou will meet with the prime ministers and officials from the three Balkan countries. The delegation includes various deputies and 43 Greek businessmen with economic interests in the region. A.F. [07] BYZANTINE ERA EXHIBITIONS OPEN IN THESSALONIKIThessaloniki, 12 November 2000 (18:32 UTC+2)Culture Minister Theodoros Pangalos inaugurated three Byzantine-era exhibitions at Thessaloniki's Byzantine Museum on Friday. The first exhibition is showcasing the changes of Byzantine society during those centuries, as reflected in the architecture, sculpture and objects of the daily life of people of that era. The second exhibition is showcasing coins and objects used by the administrative elite of that era and the third exhibition deals with the castles built to protect the Balkan regions of the empire, protecting the route from Thessaloniki to the Constantinople, present day Istanbul. [08] PHOTO EXHIBITION OF AEGEAN UNDERWAY IN PARISParis, 12 November 2000 (18:30 UTC+2)A photographic exhibition titled "Aegean-Pictures of Greece" is presently underway in Paris, at the "Les Sources de l'Europe" exhibition site.
