[02] GREECE WINS SILVER IN WEIGHTLIFTING COMPETITION

    Sydney, 17 September 2000 (17:51 UTC+2)

Greek weightlifting champion Leonidas Sabanis (silver medalist at the Atlanta 1996 Games), won the silver medal in the Men's 62 kilogram class today at Sydney's Olympic Games after lifting a total of 317.5kg (147.5 in the snatch and 170 in the clean and jerk).

European champion Nikolay Pechalov of Croatia won the gold medal, and set an Olympic Games record, by lifting 150kg in the snatch and 175kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 325kg.

Bronze medalist Sevdalin Minchev, Bulgaria, also totaled 317.5kg after lifting 140kg in the snatch and 177.5kg in the clean and jerk.

Each nation is allowed a set number of entrants according to its ranking. Athletes will perform two different lifts - the snatch and the clean and jerk -- and will be ranked according to the combined weight lifted in the two.

[03] GREEK, TURKISH FMs MEET AGAIN, AGREE ON CBMs

    New York, 17 September 2000 (20:00 UTC+2)

Foreign Minister George Papandreou held a second meeting with his Turkish counterpart Ismael Cem in New York yesterday, where they agreed to proceed with confidence-building- measures (CBMs) regarding the Aegean Sea.

In an interview with the Macedonian Press Agency, Mr. Papandreou stated that the agreement is the successful result of lengthy negotiations between the two sides.

"Military matters will be discussed in NATO on the basis of the Papoulias-Yilmaz accord, whereas measures pertaining to neighborly issues shall be discussed by the general directors of the respective countries' foreign ministries," Mr. Papandreou stated.

According to the Foreign Minister, Turkey has submitted a proposals report relevant to the CBMs.

"Many ideas (submitted) by both sides can be adopted," Mr. Papandreou stated.

Meanwhile, public statements given by the two Ministers, after a working lunch at a Greek restaurant in New York, indicate that the Cyprus question was not on their agenda.

According to press reports, Mr. Cem's speech before the UN General Assembly has sent a message of hope for Greek and Turkish relations but refused to extend that message to Cyprus.

[05] OTPOR CONCERT HELD IN TOWN DESPITE OBJECTIONS

    Thessaloniki, 17 September 2000 (19:38 UTC+2)

A concert in Thessaloniki in support of a Yugoslav student group opposed to President Slobodan Milosevic (OTPOR, or Resistance) was held last night at Thessaloniki's Aristotle University, after city officials refused to allow the event to take place on municipal grounds, noting that it was a political event regarding the internal affairs of a foreign country.

The Communist Party of Greece was opposed to the concert since it considers Yugoslav opposition parties to be supported by the United States as part of an effort to overthrow Milosevic and install a government more friendly to the West.

"Representatives of the Yugoslav opposition move through our country and, in cooperation with those who butchered their people, participate in political events under the guise of culture," said Thessaloniki's Committee for International Detente and Peace.

The KKE-led group has accused Foreign Minister George Papandreou of orchestrating the concert and had called on city residents to prevent it from taking place.

    The oath reads as follows:

"In the name of all the competitors I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams."
