The role of the mass media in the improvement of relations between Greece and Turkey will be the main topic of discussion in the first three-day Greek-Turkish journalist meeting that opened in the south-eastern Aegean island of Rhodes yesterday.

[02] ASIA FORUM: PROPOSALS FOR EURO-ASIAN COOPERATION IN TRANSPORTATION

    Thessaloniki, 27 May 2000 (15:44 UTC+2)

The key to the development of Euro-Asian cooperation in the sector of transportation is the consensus between the states which can be achieved only through overcoming certain distinct national priorities, stated Greek ministry of transportation general secretary Yiannis Maniatis speaking in the sixth day of the ASIA FORUM 2000 that is being held in Thessaloniki.

In order to put to practice certain visions, like the operation of the Euro-Asian axis TRECECA that will link Europe with central Asia through the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea the states in the region must realize that certain distinct national priorities must be lifted within the framework of the globalized economy, said Mr. Maniatis.

He also said that already the initiative that was undertaken three years ago for the unification of the transportation sector in south-eastern Europe has started giving fruit. The signing of a memorandum of understanding by 11 transportation ministers from south-eastern European states has opened the door to the region's transformation into a world transportation crossroads by lifting bureaucratic procedures, unifying pricing policies and introducing clarity in transactions.
