The Greek currency was 1.36 per cent off against the US dollar, 1.02 per cent down against the British pound, 0.72 per cent lower against the D Mark and lost 0.78 per cent against the ECU.

[03] BELGRADE RESPONDS POSITIVELY TO RUGOVA'S PROPOSAL FOR NEGOTIATIONS

    Belgrade, August 14 (MPA)

Belgrade has responded positively to the proopo0sal submitted by the leader of the region's Albanians Ibrahim Rugova concerning the special negotiating team that would lead into talks with the Serbs.

However, it's still unknown how the leaders of the "Kossovo liberation Army" will react to this initiative.

Meanwhile, NATO's secretary-general Javier Solana has asked the Serb government to remove its military forces from Kossovo in order to enable the start of talks.

[04] ALTERNATE FM PAPANDREOU IN AUSTRIA FOR EU'S FOREIGN MINISTERS TALKS

    Athens, August 14 (MPA)

Alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou departed for Salzburg, Austria, yestrerday, in order to attend a meeting of the European Union foreign ministers which starts today.

According to reports, the talks will focus on the major issues currently of concern to the EU and institutional matters such as the number of votes held by member-states at the Council of Ministers and representation by commissioners.

[05] US ENVOY TO CYPRUS THOMAS MILLER TO VISIT TURKEY ON MONDAY

    Washington, August 14 (MPA)

The United States envoy for the Cyprus issue Thomas Miller is to visit Ankara on Monday, with the S-300 missiles and proposals for a no-fly zone that might prevent their deployment expected to be high on the agenda.

Mr. Miller is exploring ways of postponing and eventually canceling the arrival of the Russian-made missiles to Cyprus. Turkey has threatened a military strike on the missiles if they are deployed.

The idea of a no-fly zone, which might make the anti-aircraft missiles redundant, was first proposed by Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos. Turkey has so far consistently opposed plans for a flight moratorium over Cyprus.
