NEWS IN DETAIL[01] ND DEPUTIES GIOVANOUDAS AND GIAKOUMATOS WILL APPEAR BEFORE THE PARTY DISCIPLINARY COUNCILAthens 22 July (MPA)The fate of the two New Democracy deputies Varsamis Giovanoudas and Gerasimos Giakoumatos will be in the hands of the party Disciplinary Council which convenes today. ND party leader Kostas Karamanlis decided himself to bring Mr. Giakoumatos before the Disciplinary Council as the Ethics Council had decided yesterday that only Mr. Giovanoudas’ case had to be judged by the Disciplinary Council. Presiding the Ethics Council was former party leader Miltiadis Evert.[02] MEETING ON CYPRUSAthens 22 July (MPA)A wide government meeting on Cyprus will be held today with the participation of minister of foreign affairs Theodoros Pangalos, minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos and chief of the National Guard of Cyprus Dimitris Dimou. Meanwhile, the German foreign ministry has issued a travel advisory warning the tourists visiting Cyprus in view of the installation of the S-300 anti-aircraft missiles on the island.[03] NEW 24HOUR STRIKE TOMORROW BY THE GREEK GENERAL CONFEDERATION OF LABOR AND THE RAILWAY EMPLOYEESThessaloniki 22 July (MPA)Workers in Greece will be on a 24hour strike tomorrow held within the framework of the mobilizations organized by the Greek General Confederation of Labor. The strikers protest against the new draft bill on work relations scheduled to be submitted in Parliament in the following days. Also, among the main demands of the strikers is to safeguard a 35hour working week Meanwhile, the Federation of Railway Employees has also announced a 24hour strike for tomorrow. Among the main demands of the strikers, is the reassessment of certain aspects of the work relations, while protests are being made against the intended selling of parts of the network which are regarded as profit-making. Also, the railway employees demand the immediate financing of modernization projects.[04] THE ARMED CLASHES CONTINUE IN KOSOVOBelgrade 22 July (MPA)The armed clashes between Serb forces and the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army continue at the outskirts of the town of Orahovac. The Serb forces announced that they have recaptured Orahovac and according to ethnic Albanian sources, 36 people have been killed in the clashes. The international community is alarmed by the situation and the United Nations Security Council has decided to reinforce the peace- keepers in FYROM fearing that the clashes might spread to neighboring states.[05] GREECE’S EU FUNDS ABSORPTION CAPABILITY SHOWS IMPRESSIVE IMPROVEMENTLondon 22 July (MPA)A European Commission report shows that Greece’s ability to absorb the EU structural funds more effectively, has increased. The European Commission refers to Greece’s great progress in absorbing EU funds and the sum mentioned in the report is over 11 billion dollars.In its conclusions the European Commission also underlines that in order for Greece to fully take advantage of the structural funds it should continue to implement the policy of modernization and privatization. [06] WALL STREET JOURNAL: STEPS OF PROGRESS BY THE GREEK ECONOMYAthens 22 July (MPA)Great steps of progress have been made by the Greek economy as the government managed to make the domestic capital market more tempting, while it improved the prestige of the drachma. The above are included in an extensive report published in the reliable US newspaper “Wall Street Journal”.In the report it is mentioned that the factors that could have a negative effect on the Greek economy are the municipal elections and the tension in the relations with Turkey. However, the threat of negative developments appears distant, at least for the moment, given the fact that the general index of the Athens Stock Exchange went over the 2.800 units mark. [07] CYPRUS PROTESTED TO THE UN FOR THE VIOLATIONS OF ITS AIR SPACENicosia 22 July (MPA)Cyprus’s permanent representative in the United Nations Sotos Zakheos expressed the Cypriot government’s strong protest against the new violations of Cyprus’s air space by Turkish fighter jets on July 10.In a letter, which circulated as an official document of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Zakheos stressed that such violations are contrary to the UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus which mention that such flights increase the political tension on the island and undermine the efforts for a final solution to the problem. [08] THE CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN ON THE PRESENCE OF US OFFICIALS IN THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIESNicosia 22 July (MPA)Cypriot government spokesman Christos Stilianidis, commenting on the presence of US officials in the events on the occasion of the black anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus which were held in the Turkish occupied northern Cyprus, stated that US officials should not attend events held by the Turkish Cypriot regime because this way they legitimize everything which is negative and in conflict with the spirit of the UN Security Council resolutions and the decisions of the US Congress.Mr. Stilianidis pointed out however that there is one positive fact namely, that the US State Department spokesman has stated that there was no formal participation of American officials in those events.
