    [01] PREMIER DETERMINED TO “CLEANSE” OLYMPIC AIRWAYS

    Athens, February 19 (MPA)

    Addressing the Hellenic Parliament last evening, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis expressed his determination to put order in to the national airline, the ailing Olympic Airways, within the next two-month period.

    Mr. Simitis stressed that the government will undertake all the necessary measures to safeguard OA’s role as national airline, while he also announced the timetable set forth for the company’s revitalization.

    [02] BULGARIA’S VICE-PRESIDENT IN THESSALONIKI THIS WEEKEND

    Thessaloniki, February 19 (MPA)

    The vice-president of the Bulgarian government, who is also the country’s Minister of Industry, Mr. Buskov, is to arrive in Thessaloniki this weekend, accompanied by a large delegation of Bulgarian businessmen.

    Mr. Buskov and his delegation are to meet with the managers of the Association of Industries of Northern Greece (SVVE), as well as with Greek businessmen who are already active in the neighboring country. They plan on outlining the hurdles they face in their business activities in Bulgaria.

    [03] UN CHIEF TRAVELS TO IRAQ TOMORROW IN AN EFFORT TO DIFFUSE TENSION

    New York, February 19 (MPA)

    The United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan is to travel to Baghdad tomorrow, in an effort to avert the United States’ potential strike against Iraq.

    Meanwhile, the UN’s employees departed Baghdad for Jordan today, to be followed by other staff tomorrow.

    [04] PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC TO VISIT IOANNINA TOMORROW

    Athens, February 19 (MPA)

    The President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos is to visit the city of Ioannina tomorrow, in order to attend the 85th anniversary since the city’s liberation.

    Tomorrow evening, the President will attend a dinner to be hosted in his honor by the city’s mayor, while on Saturday President Stephanopoulos will inaugurate an exhibition concerning the liberation. He will also visit the archaeological site of Dodoni.

    [05] GREEK GOVERNMENT HOPES ANNAN’S VISIT TO BAGHDAD WILL BE FRUITFUL

    Athens, February 19 (MPA)

    The Greek government has expressed its opposition to any country producing, possessing or using chemical or nuclear weapons, as the Minster of Press and Media Dimitris Reppas stated yesterday when asked to comment on the Iraqi crisis.

    United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan will travel to Baghdad tomorrow, having received full UN Security Council support, and will meet Iraqi President Saddam Hussein over the weekend.

    Mr. Reppas said that Mr. Annan's visit to Iraq was a positive development, adding that the Greek government hoped for a successful outcome of the UN chief's mission, averting the use of force. He also underlined that UN Security Council resolutions should be respected.

    [06] GREEK DEFENSE MINISTER IN ALEXANDRIA, MEETS WITH PATRIARCH PETROS

    Alexandria, February 19 (MPA)

    Greece’s Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, summed up an official visit to Egypt yesterday, where he met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, while, during his visit to Alexandria, he was also received by the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Petros yesterday.

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos' visit focused on defense issues and cooperation in the military sector, as well as on the views of Arab countries regarding a possible US military strike against Iraq.

    The Greek Defense Minister stated that the two countries agreed to the implementation of joint cooperation programs on the holding of military exercises in the southeastern Mediterranean and exchanges of military representations which will enable Athens and Cairo to contribute towards the consolidation of peace, security and stability in the region.

    [07] ALBANIAN EX-PRESIDENT RECUPERATES FROM QUADRUPLE BY-PASS

    Thessaloniki, February 19 (MPA)

    Albania’s former president Ramiz Alia is recovering satisfactorily after having undergone a quadruple by-pass operation at Thessaloniki's George Papanikolaou Hospital on Tuesday.

    The four-hour operation on the 73-year-old man was performed by the head of the hospital’s cardiology unit, Panayiotis Spyrou.

    Mr. Alia, who was admitted late Sunday night after arriving from Tirana, will remain in intensive care for two days before being moved to a hospital room to recuperate for another week.

    According to the hospital’s vice-president Mr. Papademetriou, the normal stay for open-heart surgery patients is ten days. Mr. Alia had been in intensive care in a Tirana hospital following a heart attack he suffered two weeks ago. His traveling expenses have been paid for by an anonymous Thessaloniki businessman. He had suffered his first heart attack six years ago while in an Albanian prison.

    [08] SEMINAR FOR GREEK WRITER KAZANTZAKIS TO BE HELD IN MADRID

    Madrid, February 19 (MPA)

    The parallels and reference points made by the renowned writer, the late Nikos Kazantzakis, between Greece and Spain, as well as the international dimensions of his works are to be addressed by the participants at a seminar to be held in Spain on February 26.

    The seminar, which will be held at Madrid’s "Circulo de Bellas Artes", constitutes the first official presentation of the newly-formed Greek-Spanish forum.

    [09] GREECE TO GIVE 14 BILLION DRACHMAS IN FUNDS TO ADVERTISE TOURISM

    Athens, February 19 (MPA)

    Greece’s National Tourism Organization (EOT) announced yesterday that its advertising campaign budget totals 14 billion drachmas this year,

    The Organization announced that it will spend 4.0 billion drachmas on its traditional advertising campaign in 1998 in more than 20 countries around the world, and another 10 billion on promotion.

    Greek tourism authorities will focus their efforts on improving marketing and public relations.
