    [01] GREEK-BULGARIAN-ROMANIAN MINISTERIAL MEETING

    Thessaloniki 5 February (MPA)

    The tripartite ministerial meeting of Greece, Bulgaria and Romania continues in Thessaloniki. At the center of the talks are issues of common interest in the sectors of transportation, the environment and public works.

    During the meeting, the ministers are expected to confirm their cooperation for the development of the necessary transportation infrastructure network and the protection of the environment.

    In the meeting participate on behalf of Bulgaria government vice-president and minister of regional development Evgeni Bakardjiev, minister of transportation Wilhelm Krauss and minister of environment Ebdokia Maneva, while the Romanian side is represented by undersecretaries of transportation Aleodor-Marian Francu and environmental protection Viorel Raicu.

    On behalf of Greece participate minister of environment, land planning and public works K. Laliotis, minister of transportation T. Mantelis and minister of Macedonia-Thrace Mr. Petsalnikos as well as, undersecretaries of environment, land planning and public works Mr. Verelis and Mr. Koliopanos.

    The ministers are expected to stress the importance of the development of an effective transportation network in the Balkans through the completion of the inter-European transportation networks in the region, with a priority to the Egnatia road network.

    [02] THE FORMAL OPENING OF THE BLACK SEA BANK WILL BE HELD IN JUNE

    Thessaloniki 5 February (MPA)

    The formal opening of the Black Sea Commerce and Development Bank is expected to be held in June. This was announced in today’s 1st meeting of the Black Sea Bank Board of Directors that was held in Thessaloniki. The largest share capital of the bank, that will be based in Thessaloniki, belongs to Greece, Turkey and Russia.

    Greek ministry of national economy adviser Mr. Zachariadis, who is presiding over the Black Sea Bank preparatory committee, delivered an outline of the bank’s business plan today. It should be noted, that the Greek ministry of national economy and finance with its intervention in the EU won the funding of the bank’s business plan through the TACIS community program with the sum of 250.000 ECU.

    In today’s meeting was present the Black Sea Bank’s first president Ersoi Volkan, while among the bank’s directors are included undersecretaries of finance from certain of the countries participating on the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization, BSEC.

    The organization’s General Secretary Mr.Vaitsek stated that thanks to the Black Sea Bank Thessaloniki will become the financial “heart” of BSEC, while he thanked the governments of the countries that participate in BSEC for the sacrifices they made toward the establishment of the Black Sea Bank. He also congratulated the Greek side for its efforts to turn this vision into a reality.

    Turkish undersecretary of finance Gener Didsmen characterized the Black Sea Bank as a milestone for the economic cooperation of the BSEC countries, adding that it opens the way for the creation of the economic infrastructure of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization.

    In the bank participate Greece, Turkey, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Azerbaidjan, Armenia, Georgia, Moldavia and Albania.

    [03] FARMERS BLOCKADED THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY IN MALGARA

    Thessaloniki 5 February (MPA)

    The farmers from northern Greece blockaded the Athens- Thessaloniki national road network in Malgara. The blockade is symbolic and will last until the struggle committee meeting ends and therefore, drivers will have to use country roads.

    Meanwhile, the farmers in Thessaly, central Greece, have decided to blockade the Athens-Thessaloniki national road network at Viocarpet.

    [04] THE CRISIS IN THE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY CONTINUES

    Athens 5 February (MPA)

    Right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis had several meetings with his close associates today, while he continues to be the target of the statements made by the expelled party members.

    Mr. Giorgos Souflias stated that a small group in New Democracy believes that owns the party and tries to shape it the way it wants, adding that he will continue the fight for the rebirth of the movement and its victory in the next elections.

    Mr. Stefanos Manos stated that elections are not won through expulsions and that the damage done will be corrected.

    Mr. Vasilis Kontoyiannopoulos characterized the leadership of New Democracy as inept in the handling of the situation and left open all eventualities.

    [05] ANHEL IORDANESCU WILL BE IN ATHENS TODAY

    Athens 5 February (MPA)

    Romanian football coach Anhel Iordanescu will be in Athens today and according to all indications, he will be the new coach of the Greek national football team.

    Mr. Iordanescu will meet with Greek Football Federation president Sotiris Alimisis and vice-president Stelios Sfakianakis to discuss the remaining details before a contract is signed.

    The Greek Football Federation board of directors will meet on Monday and it will announce the name of the Greek national football team coach. Mr.Iordanescu, is currently the head coach of the Romanian national football team and he will take over the Greek national team after the end of the World Cup in France on July 12.

    [06] THE CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT PROTESTED TO THE UN OVER THE NEW TURKISH THREATS AGAINST CYPRUS

    Nicosia 5 February (MPA)

    The Cypriot government protested to the United Nations over the new Turkish threats targeting Cyprus regarding the “Andreas Papandreou” air base in Paphos.

    In a letter to the UN secretary-general, Cyprus’ permanent representative in the United Nations ambassador Sotos Zakheos stressed that the Cypriot Republic has to take effective measures for its defense due to the fact that the occupation and deadlock continue for 24 years.

    The Cypriot diplomat also called on the UN secretary-general to remind to Ankara that it has to meet its responsibilities that stem from the UN charter.

    [07] THE TURKISH CYPRIOT SIDE DELIVERED INFORMATION TO THE UN ON THE BURIAL SITES OF MISSING GREEK CYPRIOTS

    Nicosia 5 February (MPA)

    The Turkish Cypriot side has delivered to the United Nations information on the burial sites of missing Greek Cypriots according to UN secretary-general deputy special envoy to Cyprus, Gustav Feisel and human rights issues commissioner, Takis Christopoulos.

    Mr. Christopoulos referred to information concerning 400 cases of missing Greek Cypriots, characterizing the information offered as “satisfactory” and the job done by the Turkish Cypriot side as “serious”. The exchange of information is expected to take place early next week.

    [08] THE MUNICIPALITY OF KALAMARIA EMBRACES THE KALASH

    Thessaloniki 5 February (MPA)

    One of the 30 villages of the Kalash in Pakistan, who are the descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great, will be adopted by the municipality of Kalamaria which will undertake the construction of its water supply and drainage network, while it will also build a cultural center that will be named after the sister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki.

    The announcement was made by Kalamaria mayor Thrasivoulos Lazaridis, who said that the decision will be ratified by the city council next Thursday.

    Twelve Kalash children under 15 years of age are being hosted by the municipality of Kalamaria on the occasion of a television program that will be broadcast tomorrow evening by the state television station ET-3 in Thessaloniki.
