NEWS IN DETAIL[01] UNDERSECRETARY TO THE PM SPEAKS ON GREECE’S ROLE IN THE BALKANSThessaloniki, January 23 (MPA)The Undersecretary to the Premier George Paschalides referred to Greece’s role in the Balkans, during an interview he granted to the daily “Aggelioforos”Mr. Paschalides stated that “the adoption of a mechanistic and economic concept that the Greek presence in the Balkan countries will only be based on a few business activities or in our country’s contribution to the promotion of Community funding programs which will lead to these countries’ economic development and modernization is false.” He explained that there can be no economic development if the necessary climate of domestic stability is absent. [02] US ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF BRIEFED ON TURKISH PROVOCATIONSAthens, January 23 (MPA)Greece’s Minister of National Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos met with Gen. Dennis Reimer, the US Army Chief of Staff in Athens yesterday, whom he briefed on the Turkish provocation. Gen. Reimer met with his Greek counterpart Lieutenant General Manoussos Parayioudakis and the Chief of the National Defense General Staff, General Athanasios Tzoganis.During his stay in Greece, Gen. Reimer will visit army units and archaeological sites. Meanwhile, Greece’s Parliament President Apostolos Kaklamanis stated that there is a possibility that Turkey’s tactics and the behavior of the military leaders that govern Ankara today could lead to trouble. Mr. Kaklamanis said that Ankara was waging a war of nerves with Europe and "reacting like a spoiled child to the conditions set by the European Union for a country to join the European family". Greece, he continued, is well aware that this tactic may cause "certain adventures". [03] GREEK FARMERS TO BLOCKADE ATHENS-THESSALONIKI RAILWAY LINEThessaloniki, January 23 (MPA)Greek farmers are to blockade the railway line connecting Athens with Thessaloniki, in a symbolic act of solidarity to their counterparts who are currently being tried in the city of Larissa for obstruction of transportation during last year’s mass mobilizations.Meanwhile, the Greek Railway Organization (OSE) has asked the law enforcement authorities to take the necessary measures so that the routes will be conducted. [04] MAIN OPPOSITION’S HONORARY PRESIDENT SEPAKS TO “ETHNIKOS KYRIKAS”New York, January 23 (MPA)The honorary President of Greece’s main opposition party, New Democracy’s Konstantinos Mitsotakis, has granted a lengthy interview to New York’s Greek-language daily “Ethnikos Kyrikas” wherein he refers to Greece’s national issues and Greek-Turkish relations.“Greece can solve the issue of the six-mile territorial waters and ten-mile air space, either by reducing the air space or by increasing its territorial waters, within the 12-mile limit,” he said. Referring to the evident tension in Greek-Turkish relations, Mr. Mitsotakis stated that Turkey is responding in a knee-jerk manner, especially its military leaders. In regards to the Cyrpius issue, Mr. Mitsotakis stated that developments are expected to take place within the year, and stressed that the matter should be focal point of Greece’s foreign policy. Moreover, he stated that any solution that will be promoted on the Cyprus issue should be approved through a referendum by the Cypriot people. [05] EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT: NO FUND CUTS FOR EGNATIA ROUTEBrussels, January 23 (MPA)The President of the European Commission Jacques Santer has stated that there will be no reduction in the Community Support Fund monies allocated for the under-construction Egnatia route or natural gas projects.Mr. Santer responded to a letter forwarded by Greek Eurodeputy Antonis Trakatelis, which stated that the government could possibly shift funds from major projects in northern Greece in order to use them in other, smaller projects. [06] AGRICULTURAL TRADE FAIR AGROTICA ’98 OPENS JANUARY 28 IN THESSALONIKIThessaloniki, January 23 (MPA)The largest annual agricultural trade fair in the Balkans, Agrotica '98, is to open in Thessaloniki on January 28, organized by Helexpo, International trade Fair of Thessaloniki.This year’s event, which started 14 years ago, will feature an increased number of exhibitors and will occupy the largest area in the fair’s history. According to Helexpo, 1,517 Greek and foreign exhibitors will display their goods, on a site of more than 38,500 square meters. A total of 776 foreign exhibitors from 35 countries and 741 Greek companies will participate, while seven countries - Albania, Bulgaria, France, Spain, Italy, Poland and Tunisia - will participate with national pavilions. [07] GREECE’S SUPREME COURT: COMPOUND INTEREST ON BANK DEBTS IS ILLEGALAthens, January 23 (MPA)Greece’s Supreme court ruled yesterday that the unilateral levying of compound interest by banks on outstanding debts is illegal.In a majority vote, 16-5, the high jurists overturned an appelate court ruling and sent the matter back for reconsideration. [08] GREEK CONSULATE BEGINS OPERATION IN KORITSAKoritsa, January 23 (MPA)A Greek consulate has began its operation in the city of Koritsa as of yesterday. Consul-general G. Heliopoulos stated that a priority task is to develop border cooperation in the sectors of culture, economy and other areas of common interest,Moreover, Mr. Heliopoulos referred to the good ties developed in the recent year s between the city of Koritsa with other cities in northern Greece, such as Thessaloniki, Florina and Kozani. [09] ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA TRANSLATED IN ENGLISH BY UNIV. OF PENNSYLVANIANew York, January 23 (MPA)The first, in the last 60 years, complete translation of ancient Greek drama is to be published by the University of Pennsylvania in 12 volumes, featuring 49 works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes and Meandros. The first three volumes of this impressive series has already been published in 5,000 copies with the remaining books expected to be completed by the spring of 1999.Random House had published similar volumes in 1938. [10] FOLKRORE MINIATURE DOLLS FROM ALL OVER GREECE EXHIBITED IN TOWNThessaloniki, January 23 (MPA)A vast collection of folklore miniature dolls, hand-made by a local woman, are to be exhibited on Monday, January 26, in Thessaloniki at the art center of the city’s Culture Directorate.The 175 dainty miniatures, ranging in size from 1o-30 cm, are true-to-life replicas of traditional costumes worn in various regions of the country. The detailed costumes, at times quite intricate, date back to the Byzantine and post-Byzantine eras. The artist, Maria Vahaviolou, has been crafting the dolls since 1952. [11] GREECE AND BRITAIN CONTINUE DISCUSSION ON PARTHENON MARBLESLondon, January 23 (MPA)The Heritage Secretary of the British government Chris Smith has stated that his country and Greece are "continuing discussion" on the issue of the Parthenon Marbles.Greece is continuing the efforts to have the ancient marbles returned to their original site, an effort crusaded by the late actress and political activist Melina Mercouri. The Parthenon marbles were taken by Britain’s Lord Elgin in 1806 and they later became the property of the British Museum in London, where they are currently displayed.
