    [01] PANGALOS: WE WILL GIVE THE RIGHT RESPONSE TO THE SCENARIOS ON TERRORISM

    Athens 3 October (MPA)

    Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos said that “we will give a response at the right place and time”, reacting to the statements made repeatedly by US State Department spokesmen on the scenarios regarding Greece’s involvement in the issue of terrorism.

    US State Department spokesman Jim Foley commented again on the issue and said that the United States have not come to the conclusion that Greece harbors terrorism.

    Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas responded that offices of Kurdish organizations, which are allegedly active in Greece, are open in the United States and Europe as well.

    [02] SEZGIN LAUNCHED AN ATTACK AGAINST PANGALOS

    Sofia 3 October (MPA)

    Turkish Minister of Defense Ismet Sezgin launched an attack against Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos in statements he made to reporters during the Summit meeting of south-eastern European Defense Ministers that is being held in Sofia.

    Mr.Sezgin accused mr.Pangalos of choosing carefully the phrase “we do not talk with killers, robbers and rapists” when he referred to Turkey and stressed that the dialogue between the two countries can be restored regardless of the existing situation.

    [03] THE GREEK PARLIAMENT PRESIDENT COMPLETED HIS VISIT TO AUSTRALIA

    Melbourne 3 October (MPA)

    Greek Parliament President Apostolos Kaklamanis expressed complete satisfaction for the results of his visit to Australia.

    In his meeting with Australian Prime Minister mr.Howard, were discussed Greek foreign policy issues, while mr.Kaklamanis also had talks with the leader of the Labor party, the leaders of the two legislative bodies in the country and other members of the Australian political leadership. Mr.Kaklamanis will return to Athens on Sunday.

    [04] THE 3RD EURO-MEDITERRANEAN INDUSTRY SUMMIT WILL OPEN ON MONDAY

    Athens 3 October (MPA)

    The 3rd Euro-Mediterranean Industry Summit will open in Athens on Monday under the auspices of Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and will be completed on Tuesday.

    In the Summit, which is organized by the Association of Greek Industries in cooperation with the Ministry of Development, the EU Commission and the Association of Industry and Employers’ Associations of Europe, will participate 500 delegates from 31 countries.

    [05] THE SECOND ROUND OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN SERBIA WILL BE HELD ON SUNDAY

    Belgrade 3 October (MPA)

    The pre-election campaign for the second round of presidential elections in Serbia and Montenegro, that will be held on Sunday, is being completed today.

    In Serbia, the candidates for the Presidency are Zoran Lilic, who got 35,7% of the votes in the first round and ultra-nationalist Voicislav Seseli, with 27,8%.

    [06] THE WORLD HOUSING DAY IS BEING CELEBRATED TODAY

    Athens 3 October (MPA)

    October 3rd has been declared as World Housing Day aimed at securing the continuous sensitization of the public opinion to the plight of thousands of homeless around the world.

    According to an EU research this year, about 200.000 people live in shanty-towns in southern Europe, while in the same region there is an equal number of homeless immigrants and people who live in trailers and tents.

    Very alarming is the fact that while until recently the homeless in their majority were men, lately there is a rapid increase in the number of homeless women and children.

    According to the same research, children living in the streets are found mainly in Portugal and Greece.

    [07] THE CYPRIOT PRESIDENT AND THE UN SECRETARY-GENERAL WILL MEET IN NEW YORK

    Nicosia 3 October (MPA)

    Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides will discuss with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in New York all the details of the Cyprus problem, according to alternate UN special envoy Gustav Feisel, who also stressed that no dramatic changes are expected in the Cyprus problem before the presidential elections in February.

    He also added that “small steps” should be made such as, the July agreement on humanitarian issues and the current efforts on security.

    [08] THE CYPRIOT FOREIGN MINISTER MET WITH THE US PRESIDENTIAL ENVOY

    New York 3 October (MPA)

    US Presidential envoy to Cyprus Richard Halbrooke characterized as favorable and advantageous for both sides in Cyprus the opening of the dividing line in the island, which will allow the free development of local and international businesses.

    In statements he made after his meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Yiannakis Kasoulides, mr.Halbrooke said that many countries and peoples have trade transactions without having their differences settled.

    The US official also stated that he will be among those who will officially open the meeting of Greek, Turkish, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot businessmen that will be held in Brussels on November 13-15, under the auspices of the Norwegian Peace Institute and Colombia University.

    [09] TURKISH TYCOON RAHMI KOC BACKS THE RE-OPENING OF THE THEOLOGY SCHOOL IN HALKI

    Ankara 3 October (MPA)

    Turkish business tycoon Rahmi Koc supports the reopening of the Theology School in Halki, while he regards as totally wrong Turkey’s policy of keeping distances from the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

    In an interview with the Turkish newspaper “Milliyet”, on the occasion of the symposium “Religion, Science, Environment. The Black Sea in danger”, that was held under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, mr.Koc said that the indifference displayed by the state is a “totally wrong policy”. He said that also wrong are the reactions regarding the role of the Ecumenical Patriarch in the holding of the symposium and went on to condemn the incidents in Trabzon.

    [10] US TROOPS WILL PARTICIPATE IN A MILITARY EXERCISE NEAR THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki 3 October (MPA)

    The first phase of the military exercise “Dynamic Mix ‘97” is being held in Kiparisia with the participation of strategic reserves from 5 NATO member states based in former Yugoslavia. The exercise includes scenarios of NATO military operations in Bosnia and will be completed tomorrow.

    The second phase, which will last until October 13, will be held near Thessaloniki and the main volume of the US battalion that will participate in the exercise is expected to arrive at Macedonia Airport on Sunday.

    The exercise will be watched by high ranking NATO officers. The “Dynamic Mix ‘97” is an annual military exercise and is being held in NATO’s south wing with the participation of 14 North Atlantic Alliance member states.
