    [01] PRIME MINISTER SIMITIS WILL INAUGURATE THE 62ND THESSALONIKI INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR

    Thessaloniki 5 September (MPA)

    Starting today and for a whole week Thessaloniki will be at the center of European attention. Prime Minister Kostas Simitis accompanied by a large government delegation will inaugurate the 62nd Thessaloniki International Trade Fait at 8pm this evening.

    The Prime Minister’s speech at the formal dinner tomorrow evening is expected with great interest as it will outline the government’s economic policy for 1998. Also, mr.Simitis will announce the new Balkan policy drawn up recently by the cabinet and in a symbolic gesture he will visit the pavilions of the Balkan countries participating in the Trade Fair.

    In this year’s Trade Fair participate over 3.000 exhibitors from Greece and other 40 countries from all over the world.

    President of the Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos and Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos in their messages for the 62nd Thessaloniki International Trade Fair underlined its importance and wished for its success.

    [02] THE GREEK MINISTER OF DEFENSE STRONGLY CRITICIZED ANKARA’S STANCE

    Athens 5 September (MPA)

    Greek Minister of Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos, in statements he made during the meeting of Greek governing party of PASOK Euro- deputies with members of the German Social-Democratic party, criticized strongly Ankara’s stance on the Cyprus issue and the Greek-Turkish relations.

    Mr.Tsochatzopoulos pointed out that the policy of annexation followed by Ankara in Cyprus is similar to the one followed by Hitler in Czechoslovakia, while he characterized as blackmail Ankara’s threats that it will not allow Cyprus’ accession into the EU.

    Regarding the presence of Greek soldiers in Balkan regions where tensions are high, he pointed out that it should be realized that Greece will undertake the social and economic cost of the continuous presence of Greek soldiers whenever is necessary.

    Meanwhile, in an interview to a Greek-speaking radio station in London mr.Tsochatzopoulos was firm on the implementation of the joint defense doctrine and pointed out that Turkey once again is a factor of instability in the region of south-eastern Europe.

    The Greek Minister of Defense also stated categorically that an attack against the Russian S-300 missiles that will be installed in Cyprus will constitute a cause of war.

    [03] THE ALBANIAN PARLIAMENT PRESIDENT WILL ARRIVE IN GREECE ON SUNDAY FOR A THREE-DAY VISIT

    Athens 5 September (MPA)

    Albanian Parliament President Skender Gjinushi will be in Greece on Sunday for a three-day visit heading a 6-member parliamentary delegation.

    During his visit to Athens, mr.Gjinushi will be received by President Kostis Stephanopoulos while he will have talks with his counterpart Apostolos Kaklamanis. Also, he will have contacts with Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos, other government officials and opposition party leaders.

    [04] THE DECISION ON WHO WILL HOST THE 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES WILL BE MADE TODAY

    Lausanne 5 September (MPA)

    Greece’s heart beats in Lausanne today, where just before 8pm this evening International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch will announce the city that will host the 2004 Olympic Games.

    The candidate cities are Athens, Rome, Stockholm, Cape Town and Buenos Aires.

    [05] SEPTEMBER 14-21 IS DECLARED MEMORIAL WEEK IN HONOR OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki 5 September (MPA)

    The Cultural Capital Organization - Thessaloniki ’97 attempts an artistic approach with Israel by declaring September 14-21 to be a Memorial Week in honor of the Jewish community in Thessaloniki.

    Distinguished artists will come from Israel and will bring with them the concerns and expectations of the Jewish people regarding its future.

    [06] RAUF DENKTASH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEADLOCK IN THE CYPRUS PROBLEM

    New York 5 September (MPA)

    Former UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar in his memoirs blames Rauf Denktash for the continuing deadlock in the Cyprus problem.

    According to mr.Cuellar, the main reason for the failure in the efforts to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem is that the Turkish-Cypriot side has a lot to lose from an integration into a united Cyprus.

    [07] REVELATIONS ON THE ROLE OF AMERICANS AND ISRAELIS IN THE S- 300 MISSILES ISSUE

    Ankara 5 September (MPA)

    The English-speaking Turkish newspaper “Turkish Daily News”, citing military and diplomatic sources in Ankara, published serious revelations regarding the involvement of Americans and Israelis in the issue concerning the Russian S-300 missiles purchased by Cyprus.

    According to the newspaper, the United States, Israel and Azerbaizdjan offer information to Turkey on the possible methods used for the transportation of the missiles to Cyprus.

    Israeli and Azeri diplomats declined to comment on the press publications, while US diplomatic sources were reluctant to confirm the information or make a comment on it.

    [08] THE ALBANIAN PARLIAMENT GAVE THE GO AHEAD FOR A NEW CONSTITUTION

    Tirana 5 September (MPA)

    The Albanian Parliament in its latest session, in which the law on the press was voted through, gave the go ahead for the opening of procedures aimed at adopting a new Constitution.

    The Parliament decided to set up a 21-member Parliamentary Committee that will draw up a draft Constitution. In the Committee participate 6 Socialist Party Parliament deputies, 3 from the Democratic Party of the opposition, 2 Social-Democrats and one from each of the parties represented in Parliament.

    [09] THE WORLD BANK WILL GRANT A LOAN TO FYROM’S PRIVATE ENTERPRISES

    Skopje 5 September (MPA)

    The World Bank decided to grant a loan to FYROM’s private enterprises after negotiations in Washington between a delegation of FYROM’s Finance Ministry and World Bank representatives.

    Formal approval to the loan is expected by the end of the month and as it was made known, FYROM will receive 45 million DM that will be paid back in the next 20 years.

    [10] THE US PENTAGON MADE CLARIFICATIONS REGARDING THE WAR SENARIOS FOR CYPRUS AND THE AEGEAN

    Washington 5 September (MPA)

    A US Pentagon spokesman made clarifications regarding the scenarios on a possible armed conflict in Cyprus and the Aegean.

    Responding to questions made by a Greek reporter in the regular briefing of the press, the US Pentagon spokesman stated that the study of the strategic evaluation center, that was prepared for the US Secretary of Defense, is part of a general assessment of the US policy.

    He said that in the study are presented different alternative scenarios and certain of them are analyzed, adding that those are hypothetical scenarios which do not represent today’s reality but what could happen.

    Referring to the study, the US Pentagon spokesman stated that the document in question does not reflect the views of the US Ministry of Defense but the views of individuals who are watching closely and evaluate the situation in different parts of the world.

    [11] AHEPA MOBILIZES TO STOP THE CLOSURE OF THE US CONSULATE IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki 5 September (MPA)

    The Greek-American organization AHEPA collects signatures of Greek-American community members in the effort to overturn the proposal submitted to the US State Department by US diplomats who suggest the permanent closure of the US Consulate in Thessaloniki.

    AHEPA has already collected 3.500 signatures calling on the US government to keep the US Consulate in Thessaloniki open and take measures for its upgrading.
