[01] PANGALOS, PAPANDREOU ON CYPRUS-EU ASSOCIATION COUNCIL

    Athens, February 26 (MPA)

In a press conference held this afternoon in Athens, Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou discussed the issue of the Cyprus-European Union Association Council.

Mr. Pangalos was quite stern towards the EU allies who propose that the Turkish-Cypriots become involved in the island's accession negotiations.

The Greek Foreign Ministry leaders intensely condemned the new provocations displayed by Turkish army officials who presented a map that shows the island of Crete as part of a region whose status, they say, is subject to question. A.F.

[02] FARMERS REPRESENTATIVES MEET WITH THE PREMIER

    Athens, February 26 (MPA)

The Greek farmers' Pan-thessaly Coordinating Committee, considered to be the country's hard-core farmers' organization, met this afternoon with the Prime Minister Kostas Simitis in Athens.

Participating in the dialogue was the leadership of the Agriculture Ministry and the participants discussed issues concerning the price of cotton, strengthening the cotton producers, production-cost reductions, debt adjustments, reduction of interest rates and relieving the farmers who participated in protests from legal penalties.

Agriculture Minister Stephanos Tzoumakas stated that the meeting was quite positive and emphasized that the dialogue between the state and the farmers is always open. A.F.

[03] FISHERMEN CLOSE OFF ENTRANCE TO THESSALONIKI'S PORT

    Thessaloniki, February 26 (MPA)

Fishermen from central Macedonia and the region of Volos, demanding untaxed fuel, have upped the ante in their mobilizations by blocking access to the entrance of Thessaloniki's port.

The decision to close off the city's port was taken by the fishermen's representatives after their meeting held yesterday with the Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Philippos Petsalnikos was fruitless. Today another meeting is to be held with the Minister in an effort to find a solution. A.F.

[04] TEACHERS NATIONAL UNION TO MEET WITH EDUCATION MINISTER

    Athens, February 26 (MPA)

The Greek teachers' national union (OLME) is to meet with Education Minister Gerasimos Arsenis today, a meeting deemed as critical since it will determine if their already six-week long strike will continue.

The union's vice-president stated that, unlike the government, the teachers are not rigid on their demands.

The striking teachers are to conduct another mass rally in Athens today. A.F.

[05] SUPREME COURT JUSTICE IN THESSALONIKI TO LOOK INTO CULTURAL CAPITAL OF EUROPE ORGANIZATION'S FINANCES

    Thessaloniki, February 26 (MPA)

The Board of Directors of the "Thessaloniki, Cultural Capital of Europe '97" Organization has agreed with the Ministers of Culture Evangelos Venizelos and Macedonia-Thrace Philippos Petsalnikos that a new start is needed for the organization.

Meanwhile, the vice-chairman of the country's Supreme Court is to arrive in Thessaloniki on Friday in order to look into the investigations currently conducted regarding the organizations' financial handlings. A.F.

[06] CYPRIOT FOREIGN MINISTER ON EU-CYPRUS ASSOCIATION COUNCIL

    Nicosia, February 26 (MPA)

Cypriot Foreign Minister Alekos Michaelides stated that the latest words stemming from Brussels regarding the negotiations of Cyprus' accession to the European Union are not acts against Cyprus but, rather, display an effort to make an offer towards Turkey.

Mr. Michaeldies stated that the Europeans are quite worried over Turkey's developments and want to get the message across that they are ready to make some provisions towards this country.

Moreover, the Cypriot Foreign Minister added that during his upcoming visit to Athens on Monday, he will attend a meeting concerning the next moves to be taken by Greece and Cyprus regarding the island's accession process.

Between March 5-10 Mr. Michaelides will meet with EU officials, among them Britain's Foreign Minister Malcolm Rifkind. A.F.

[07] ITALIAN PRESIDENT EXPECTED IN FYROM TODAY

    Rome, February 26 (MPA)

The President of Italy Oscal Luigi Scalfaro is expected in FYROM today, following an invitation issued by his counterpart Kiro Gligorov.

Aside from his meeting with the FYROM President, Mr. Scalfaro is to also address FYROM's Parliament.

Skopje is eagerly awaiting Mr. Scalfaro's visit as it expects that it will contribute to the further development of ties with Italy, given that, so far, the two countries' relations are limited to the trade sector. A.F.

Mr. Rifkind expressed his government's willingness and desire to develop economic cooperation with FYROM.

Mr. Frctkovski relayed the invitation issued by FYROM's President Kiro Gligorov to Britain's Prince Charles for a visit to Skopje. A.F.

[09] ALBANIA: UNIVERSITY STUDENTS CONTINUE HUNGER STRIKE

    Tirana, February 26 (MPA)

Students from the Polutechnic, Philosophy and Music Departments of Tirana University are abstaining form classes and examinations, in an act of solidarity to their University-of- Avlona- classmates who are currently on a hunger strike for a sixth day.

The striking students, some of whom have been hospitalized, are demanding that the state return the money to the people who were devastated by the get-rich-quick money making schemes known as "pyramid". A.F.
