  • [07] GREECE TO BE ELECTED NON-PERMANENT MEMBER IN THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL Greece has reached the doorstep of the UN Security Council, given the fact that it is expected to secure a non-permanent member seat for the period 2005-2006 in Friday's vote.

Candidates for a seat in the UN Security Council are also, Argentina, Denmark, Japan and Tanzania to replace Angola, Germany, Spain, Pakistan and Chile. The UN Security Council members are being elected by the UN General Assembly, which numbers 191 membe rs.

A diplomatic source in the UN headquarters, maintains that based on all indications until now, no UN member-state has expressed opposition to Greece's bid for a seat in the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member.

Greece's stabilizing role in the region and the successful Olympic Games held in Athens are important factors in the continuous improvement observed in Greece's image at international level.

The candidate states for a seat in the UN Security Council as non-permanent members are elected for a two-year term and usually have no opponent because they are chosen in advance based on the region they belong to. For the record, one third of the UN Se curity Council seats belong to the five permanent members (United States, Britain, France, Russia, China), which have a veto right. Algeria, Benin, Brazil, the Philippines and Romania, whose term began in January 2004, will remain in the Security Council until the end of 2005.
