  • [01] DIAMANTOPOULOU: AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IS NOT BASED ON SUBSIDIES The proposals of the European Union on the reform of the EU Joint Agricultural Policy include the disconnection of subsidies to agricultural production, stated EU Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou to the "Ta Nea" newspaper. She stressed that as far as sub sidies for cotton are concerned, the Greek government achieved the best possible result.

    She called the Opposition not to use the subsidies issue for sterile criticism and supported that the future of agriculture in Greece and its agricultural development is not based on subsidies, which she characterized as "developmental dead ends". Howeve r, she added that there are funds and reinforcements for the protection farmers.

  • [02] MAGRIOTIS: GREECE WILL NEVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT FOR CYPRUS The assurance of the Greek government and people, that they will never tire of fighting for what is just for the Greek Cypriot people, was given by Deputy Foreign Minister Giannis Magriotis, in charge of Greek abroad issues, during he greeting speech at the 1st World Council of Cypriot Youth Abroad and the 19th Meeting of OMAK and PSEKA Central Councils, which are being held in Nicosia.

    The Deputy Minister pointed out that Cyprus is at a very good point, ready to make the great step towards the large family of the European Union, to which is belongs, since it is the cradle of European Culture.

    He also pointed out that Cypriot Youth has a lot to offer to Cyprus' struggles. He ended saying that "our first goal is still to resolve the (Cyprus) National Issue, doing justice to Hellinism".

    Earlier, the deputy Minister had met with the President of the governing party, the Democratic Alarm, Nikos Anastasiadis, with whom he discussed the joint efforts of Greece and Cyprus' for Cyprus' accession to the EU, as well as issues concerning Greeks living in Cyprus.

  • [03] PAPANTONIOU: INVESTIGATIONS IN EVERY DIRECTION ON KOS ARMS THEFT The government's appreciation that the Kos arms theft was not carried out by the "November 17" terrorist organization, since the specific organization no longer has any operational capacity, was expressed by Minister of National Defense Giannos Papantoni ou in an interview to the "Eleftherotypia" newspaper.

    As far as investigations to solve the case are concerned, he noted: "We have still not reached any conclusions. Anything is possible. The investigation is being directed in every possible direction within and outside the Armed Forces, and I think we shou ld be cautious in coming to conclusions".

    The Minister stressed that within 2003 the salaries of officers, non-commissioned officers, and civilian personnel of the Armed Forces will be increased by 10%, while on the guarding of military camps, a major study is underway on the use of new technolo gies towards that goal.

  • [04] "WHITE LISTS" WITH CHEAPER BUSINESSES After the "black lists" with the names of profiteers and their businesses, "white lists" will be published, where products and services with lower prices will be indicated, as Minister of Development, Akis Tsochatzopoulos, revealed to the "Sunday Vima" n ewspaper. In the same interview, Mr. Tsochatzopoulos stressed that no agricultural products will be sold or bought without an invoice, that fuel will be sold under one invoice, while he was optimistic about inflation, appreciating that in December, it may

    even be below 3%, in comparison to December 2001.

    According to the newspaper, Mr. Tsochatzopoulos revealed that apart from activating the Competition Committee and the auditing mechanisms and the publication of lists with profiteers, the government will also assign the Consumers National Council with pu blishing lists with products and services with lower prices, regularly. In fact, this list may be sent to consumers along with their electricity bill.

    "Consumer movements, bodies for the protection of consumers must move, provide information, say what is cheaper. In fact, throughout Europe, magazines are published, there are powerful dynamics. Consumers are informed on where there are cheaper and where

    there are more expensive products", said Mr. Tsochatzopoulos, among other things, opposing "white lists" to "black lists". "What is important to me is to promote white lists. In all products, foods, beverages, to make the top of the market, those who hol d a consistent position, public knowledge", he stressed.

    "The Ministry will publish a list of producers and business owners who keep their prices at reasonable levels and retain a good level of quality, on a regular basis. These lists can be published directly by the Ministry or through consumer associations, as is the practice in Europe and the United States".

  • [05] GREECE WILL REQUEST A DATE TO BE SET FOR THE RESUMPTION OF THE TURKEY-EU NEGOTIATIONS Greece will ask for a date to be set for the resumption of the negotiations for Turkey's accession into the European Union. The request will be made in the EU Summit in Copenhagen in December in an attempt to tie this date with specific issues, like the Cyprus issue. The above were stressed by Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou in the latest cabinet meeting, according to the Athens newspaper "ETHNOS".

    The newspaper mentions that Mr. Papandreou spoke of "a new Helsinki for Turkey" in Copenhagen, stressing that Turkey will be placed in a course of meaningful reforms.

    The Foreign Minister appeared relatively pessimistic regarding developments in Turkey, maintaining that it is mostly impossible for a solution to be found for Cyprus by December when the decision for the EU enlargement is scheduled to be made.

  • [06] ACTOR YIANNIS GIONAKIS' FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE THIS AFTERNOON Famous Greek actor Yiannis Gionakis will be buried at a cemetery in Athens this afternoon. Yiannis Gionakis was one of the most famous comedians in Greece and died yesterday at the age of 80.

    In the past few years he faced serous health problems and last month his condition deteriorated.

    He was born in Athens in 1922 and abandoned a career as a medical doctor to become an actor. He played in a total of 107 movies since 1946, while he was distinguished for his theater roles, especially in plays written by author Dimitris Psathas.

  • [07] REACTIONS ON THE OPINION POLL BY "KAPA RESEARCH" The opinion poll conducted by "Kapa Research" polling company on August 22-23 on behalf of the state-run television ERT in view of the municipal elections next October caused the reaction of right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy spokesman Tho doris Rousopoulos.

    According to the opinion poll, the vote intent in the prefectural elections in Attiki is 38.2% for Fofi Gennimata, 24% for Yiannis Tzanetakos, 10.3% for Giorgos Karatzaferis, 9.8% for Manolis Glezos and 3.2% for Thanasis Pafilis.

    Mr. Rousopoulos in a written statement mentioned that the opinion poll was conducted by phone (a method of low accuracy) by a state-run company and cannot be reliable.

    Responding to Mr. Rousopoulos, government spokesman Christos Protopapas stated that he made the statements out of fear to the people's opinion.

    The television network ERT also issued a statement in which it mentions that it requested the opinion poll of its own accord and it was conducted by an opinion poll company with which it cooperates for a number of years.

  • [08] PROTOPAPAS' STATEMENTS ON TERRORISM The investigations in the effort to fight terrorism continue, stated Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas, adding that police authorities are doing their job aimed at riding the country of terrorism once and for all.

    When asked to comment on the Stazi achieves, Mr. Protopapas reminded that the evidence that arrived in Greece coming from the secret agencies of the former East Germany were forwarded to the Greek justice as soon as they were received. He stressed that n othing was hidden or feared of, while he added that no government minister was removed from his position in relation to those matters.

  • [09] MARGINAL LOSSES IN THE ASE Small losses were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index dropped to -0.11% at 2.173,89 points, while the volume of transactions was at 66.1 million Euro.

    Of the stocks trading today, 113 recorded gains while 180 had losses and the value of 113 stocks remained unchanged.

  • [10] GREECE CALLS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DECISIONS IN JOHANNESBURG The need for a specific timetable for the implementation of the decisions that will be reached in Johannesburg, was underlined by Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou and Minister of Environment, Land Planning and Public Works Vaso Papandreou. The specifi c position was expressed in statements they made in a joint press conference they gave today on the occasion of the Summit on sustainable development and environment where they will be representing Greece.

    Ms. Vaso Papandreou pointed out that the past decade was very important but the results were not encouraging because in spite of the many international agreements on the environment there is a deficit in the adoption of specific measures for their implem entation.

    Mr. Giorgos Papandreou stated that the environmental problems are a concern for everybody, a fact that was proven by the consequences of the floods in Europe.

    Both ministers pointed out that the Greek government is concerned with the climate created mostly by industrial countries and underlined that Greece promotes proposals for the protection of the environment, mainly in the region of the Balkans.

  • [B] INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  • [11] NEW ROUND OF TALKS ON CYPRUS STARTING TOMORROW The direct talks between Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will resume tomorrow within the framework of a new round of talks ahead of the meeting the two will have with UN secretary-general Kofi Annan in Paris on

    September 6.

    UN secretary-general special adviser Alvaro de Soto launched separate meetings today with Mr. Cleridis and Mr. Denktash to prepare the meeting in Paris, while British Lord David Hanney is also expected in Cyprus for this purpose followed later on by US c oordinator on Cyprus Thomas Weston.

  • [12] MAGRIOTIS: CYPRUS' EU ACCESSION COURSE IS AT ITS BEST POINT Cyprus is at its best point regarding the course of its EU accession, stated in Nicosia today visiting Greek Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannis Magriotis, according to the Cypriot news agency CNA.

    In statements he made after the meeting with Democratic Alert Party President Nikos Anastasiadis, Mr. Magriotis stated that the Greek-Cypriot relations and bilateral cooperation on Cyprus' EU accession course and the solution of its political problem is in its best possible level.

  • [13] MAGRIOTIS COMPLETED HIS VISIT TO CYPRUS Greece and Cyprus are prepared for every eventuality and in the end it is certain that they will meet the target namely, Cyprus' accession into the European Union. The statement was made by Greek Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannis Magriotis after the meeting he had with Cypriot Parliament President Dimitris Christofias. He responded to a question on whether he shares the concern in Cyprus regarding the likelihood of a hot incident on behalf of the Turkish side or even annexation of the Turkish occ upied northern Cyprus in view of its accession into the EU.

    From his part, Mr. Christofias stated referring to the same issue that there is a need for the Cypriot political leadership to complete the talks on the likely scenarios that could develop against Cyprus and discuss them with the Greek government.

    Mr. Magriotis completed his contacts in Cyprus with the meeting he had with Cypriot Culture and Education Minister Uranios Ioannidis. In the meeting they determined the time for the events that will take place in Copenhagen, Brussels and London within th e framework of the promotion of the Cypriot culture in Europe.

  • [14] BILATERAL AGREEMENT BETWEEN GREECE AND ALBANIA Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Andreas Loverdos, who is on a visit to Tirana since yesterday, had separate meetings with Albanian deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ilir Meta and Minister of Finance Arben Malai.

    Mr. Loverdos signed a bilateral agreement with the Albanian Minister of Finance for a 50 million Euro economic aid within the framework of the Greek Plan for the Economic Reconstruction of the Balkans. The Greek aid will be used for the construction of n ew infrastructure projects and the modernization of the existing ones.

    Later this afternoon, Mr. Loverdos will meet with Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano.
