[05] FOUR INTOXICATED BRITISH SOLDIERS ARRESTED IN THESSALONIKIWeb Posted: 20:57 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 26.09.1999 (MPA) Four British soldiers, serving in KFOR's army unit stationed at Thessaloniki's port, were arrested in the city yesterday evening on charges of public intoxication and offensive behavior.The four soldiers, aged 19-27, were reportedly shouting obscenities at passers-by in front of the phone company's headquarters in Thessaloniki. Apparently undaunted by the arrest and its repercussions, the servicemen continued to shout obscenities, this time against Greece, its citizens and the policemen while, when they were taken to the police station, they began doing calisthenics on the floor. One of the four, 24-year-old Lee Stephen Burrows, reportedly punched one of the police officers, while 27-year-old Peter James Barker was slightly wounded in the arm while being handcuffed. He stated that the government has made "a unilateral gesture and did not expect anything in return". Concerning the name issue pending between Greece and FYROM, Mr. Karamanlis said that Athens must not yield from its stated positions, while, concerning th Greek minority in Albania, he accused the government of not exerting as much pressure as it should have in order to establish respect for their rights in the neighboring country. The government spokesperson Dimitris Reppas said that Mr. Karamanlis "took a step into the past" through his speech. In response, N.D. spokesperson Aris Spiliotopoulos stressed that "if anything is clear in the government spokesperson's inarticulate response, is that Mr. Karamanlis' speech stung them. Members of the Greek American cultural association in New Jersey stressed the importance of maintaining and spreading the Greek language to the new generations of Greeks abroad. They also called for the upgrading of the secretariat for Greeks abroad into a ministry. A.F. [13] US SECRETARY OF STATE: IT'S TIME TO RESOLVE CYPRUS ISSUEWeb Posted: 20:57 GMT+2Washington, 26.09.1999 (MPA) United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright believes that the time is right to resolve the Cyprus issue and that there are ways to deal with Greek-Turkish disputes over the Aegean Sea.In an interview given jointly to Greece's "Kathimerini" and Turkey's "Milliyet" dailies, Ms. Albright also conveys President Clinton's resolve to assist in resolving differences between Greece and Turkey, while she also did not rule out a possible meeting between President Clinton and the Greek and Turkish Premiers, Costas Simitis and Bulent Ecevit, respectively, on the sidelines of the Organization for Security and Cooperation Meeting to be held in November at Istanbul. She called on Greece to help Turkey in its bid to join the European Union, which she described as "very important" for both Greece and the United States. "Greece and Turkey should take advantage of warmer relations since killer earthquakes devastated parts of both countries to set up principles for a "bi-zonal, bi-communal" state in Cyprus, Ms. Albright said.
