[02] GREEK DEFENSE MINISTER: NATIONAL CLEANSING HAS TO STOPWeb Posted: 19:27 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 15/08/1999 (MPA) Greece's Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who attended the celebration of theDormition of the Virgin held at the Panagia Soumela Monastery today, stated that the "ethnic cleansing" being perpetrated against the Serbs who have remained in Kosovo has to stop, while also referring to the Cypriot refugees who were forced to leave their homes in the wake of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus as "victims of ethnic cleansing". Mr. Tsochatzopoulos called on international organizations to intervene "decisively" so that the Greek-Cypriots can return to the now Turkish- occupied northern part of the island. He further added that the Greeks of the Black Sea region were "the first in our history" to suffer the consequences of ethnic cleansing (at the hands of the Turks) and for this reason "Greece is obliged and has an inalienable right to support all the struggles against all policies of ethnic cleansing". Referring to the Kosovo problem, the Defense Minister said that while Greece has already stated its opposition to the ethnic cleansing carried out against Albanians, " we now demand an end to the policy of ethnic cleansing being perpetrated by the Albanians against the Serbs". [04] PRESIDENT OF GREECE GIVES MESSAGE TO TURKEYWeb Posted: 19:27 GMT+2Athens, 15/08/1999 (MPA) The President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos, indirectly responding to Turkey's demands from Greece and its tendency to take advantage of NATO's new structure, has forwarded a clear message to the neighboring country.In an address he gave at the island of Samos yesterday, President Stephanopoulos stated that the only avenue that Turkey should follow is the observance of international treaties and accords, and to seek recourse with the International Court of Justice at The Hague. [05] DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY OBSERVED THROUGHOUT GREECEWeb Posted: 19:27 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 15/08/1999 (MPA) The Dormition of the Virgin Mary was observed throughout Greece today, where hundreds of thousands of faithful Christians flocked to the island of Tinos, the Panagia Ekatopyliani in Paros and the Panagia Soumela Monastery in order to celebrate the significant Orthodox holiday.As today also marked the Armed Forces Day, state and political leaders also took part in the festivities; the President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos and the leader of the main opposition party Kostas Karamanlis are both at the island of Paros, while minor opposition party leaders (Synaspismos Nikos Konstantopoulos and Democratic and Social Movement Dimitris Tsovolas) are at Panagia Soumela. The President of the Hellenic Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis is also at the monastery where the government is represented by the National Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos. A.F. [B] BALKANS[06] ANTI-MILOSEVIC PROTESTS CONTINUEWeb Posted: 19:27 GMT+2Belgrade, 15/08/1999 (MPA) Protests calling for the resignation of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic from the presidency are continuing throughout Serbia.Rallies were held in the cities of Valljevo and Kragoujevac yesterday, both organized by the main opposition party. Protesters in Kragoujevac announced that they plan to hold another rally tomorrow, although their counterparts in the city of Lescovac stop the protests during the weekend. A.F.
