[03] INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE IF THE ALBANIAN HIJACKER HAD ACCOMPLICESWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 17/07/1999 (MPA) The Greek police is conducting an investigation through the mobile phone companies to establish if the Albanian hijacker, who kept the passengers of a bus hostage for 30 hours, had accomplices.The police has announced that the hijacker, who was shot dead by a police sharp-shooter, was 26yearold Arbin Sufa. In 1993 he was arrested in Thessaloniki and had been deported under the name Ilia Markoj. However, in 1998 he had received a green card from the responsible office in the central Greek city of Larissa under the name Arbin Sufa. The Greek authorities will determine his identity based on his fingerprints, while his employer is expected to Thessaloniki to identify his body. [04] THE GOVERNMENT PROMOTES TOUGH MEASURES AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATIONWeb Posted: 15:27 GMT+2Athens, 17/07/1999 (MPA) The Greek government promotes tougher measures against illegal immigrants and their Greek employers, according to the announcements made yesterday by prime minister Kostas Simitis during the meetings of the cabinet and the governmental committee.The measures will target not only the illegal immigrants but their Greek employers as well, who are covering up their illegal presence in the country and offer them jobs. The prime minister intends to invite the political party leaders to separate meetings in order to draw up a joint policy against crime. Mr. Simitis stressed, after the meeting of the governmental committee, that the efforts against the incidents of violence will continue and that the government intends to hire about 2.500 people to reinforce the police and improve the guarding of border crossings. A 25member group of police officers will leave for the United States tomorrow where it will receive special raining. [B] BALKANS[05] THE DAMAGES CAUSED IN SERBIA BY THE NATO BOMBINGS ARE ESTIMATED AT 30 BILLION US DOLLARSWeb Posted: 16:27 GMT+2Belgrade, 17/07/1999 (MPA) The economic cost of the damages caused in Serbia by the three-month NATO bombing campaign is estimated at 30 billion US dollars, according to statements made by the Serb minister of finance.Minister of finance Borislav Milacic stated that for the moment the cost of the damages has reached 30 billion US dollars but the final assessments will be announced by a special governmental committee. [06] UN: THE ETHNIC ALBANIANS HAVE LAUNCHED A CAMPAIGN OF VIOLENCE AGAINST THE SERBS IN KOSOVOWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Pristina, 17/07/1999 (MPA) The UN office for refugees announced today that the ethnic Albanians in Kossovo have launched a campaign of murders, kidnappings and persecutions of the province's Serb population in retaliation to the savagery committed against them in the past.The UN office's representative stated that the protection of the Serb minority in the region is now the most crucial point. The most serious violent incidents occurred in the regional capital of Pristina and in the cities of Prizren and Orahovac as well as in the neighboring villages. In Prizren, about 50 Serb houses were burned to the ground in a period of one week within the framework of what appears to be a systematic campaign against the Serbs, stated the UN official. The NATO peacekeeping force is unable to protect the Serbs and the rest minorities, while in the past 24 hours incidents of extreme violence have been reported, including bomb explosions and the use of fire arms.
