Mr. Simitis said he does not plan to change policies presently being applied by the government, as demanded by several top party cadres after last month's European Parliament elections, where PASOK lost to the main opposition party New Democracy.

Yesterday's session was the first central committee meeting after the Euroelections, and its main task was to assess election results and decide on a restructuring of the party.

The Premier said the Euroelection result was a "useful lesson" on "certain aspects of government policy", but added that the government's legitimacy was not put in doubt by the result nor did it portend the results of next year's Parliamentary elections .
