GREECE BUSINESSMENWeb Posted: 17:06 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 02/05/1999 (MPA) A delegation from the Economic Chamber of Yugoslavia is to be in Thessaloniki on Wednesday, May 5, for a meeting with businessmen from northern Greece, in order to review the damages suffered by the sector from the conflict in Kosovo.Among the subjects to be discussed will be the difficulties faced by Greek manufacturers and businessmen who are active in Yugoslavia. The participants will brief one another on the consequences of the war, not only borne on the Greek businesses active in the neighboring country, but in Northern Greece's tourism industry and exporting - transporting ventures. [02] MPA PARTICIPATES IN HERMES TRADE EXPO THIS WEEK IN NEW YORKWeb Posted: 17:06 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 02/05/1999 (MPA) The Macedonian Press Agency is to participate at the 7th Annual Business Development Trade Show and Exhibition in the United States (Hermes Expo International 1999) , to be held on May 7-8 at the New York Hilton.The event is expected to give the opportunity to Greeks living on both sides of the Atlantic to consolidate their communication channels. This marks the first the MPA has the opportunity to take part in such an organized show, which will illustrate the agency's multifaceted activities in the media sector, and especially its singular commitment to the Greek community abroad. This year's event will also feature the participation of ventures from Albania, Romania and other Balkan countries. Greece's Undersecretary of Sports Andreas Fouras will inaugurate the event and has expressed the hope that the participation of the General Secretariat of Sports and representatives of the Greek business sector will contribute to the further advancement of Greek products and services in the U.S., as well as to the promotion of Greece's sports infrastructure, especially in light of the Athens-held Olympic Games of 2004. The Archbishop of America Spyridon will also attend the inauguration ceremony. Greek businesses interested in serving the needs of the Greek American community and establishing an initial strong foothold in the massive American market, the exhibition is certainly worth attending as a number of joint-venture seminars will be held, which can provide fertile ground for such investments. [03] GREECE TO BUY F-16S, MIRAGE 2000-5Web Posted: 17:06 GMT+2Athens, 02/05/1999 (MPA) Greece will purchase 50 F-16 Block 50 Plus combat aircraft, 15 Mirage 2000-5 and new weapons systems for its fleet of 10 Mirage 2000 as part of its multi-million dollar armaments program for the Hellenic Air Force.Prime Minister Costas Simitis announced the decision following a meeting of the Government Council on Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) on Friday. The total cost of the F-16 aircraft will come to 600 billion drachmas. The 1.3 trillion drachma Hellenic Air Force program involves the purchase of new combat aircraft and the replacement of losses. The main contenders for the lucrative fighter jet contract were the French Mirage-2000-5, the Eurofighter-2000, the US F-15 and F-16 Block 50 Plus and Russia's Soukhoi-27. [B] BALKANS[06] US SOLDIERS RELEASED FROM F.R.Y., HAVE NOW ENTERED CROATIAWeb Posted: 17:06 GMT+2Belgrade, 02/05/1999 (MPA) The three United States soldiers apprehended by Yugoslav authorities, James Stone, Andrew Ramirez and Steven Gonzales, were released and entered Croatia from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia at 10.30 am this morning.They were accompanied by American clergyman Jesse Jackson who stated that their liberation is the first step towards a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Kosovo. "We must use this moment to establish peace in Kosovo", Jackson said. Commenting on the conditions in the Serbian prison, Stone said one of the guards had treated them well. He added he had received a black eye during their apprehension which was rough, as he said. After the news conference, and holding hands, the three soldiers, Jesse Jackson and his escort headed for Zagreb by bus from where they will fly to Germany to a US military base and then off to the United States. [C] EUROPE[07] RUSSIA, SWITZERLAND, GREECE COORDINATE AID TO YUGOSLAVIAWeb Posted: 17:06 GMT+2Moscow, 02/05/1999 (MPA) Russia, Switzerland and Greece are set to join efforts in order to create for the first time since the Yugoslav war began, an international mechanism of delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid in the entire Yugoslavia, including Kosovo.According to the Russian news agency Itar-Tass, a three-party initiative group has been set up for that purpose, the Russian Ministry for Emergencies reported. Two groups, one already working in Bern and the other one due to start operating in Belgrade, were set up to coordinate the three countries' efforts. The first group has already drawn up a plan of actions on rendering humanitarian aid to Yugoslavia. The plan is aimed at ensuring a quick delivery of humanitarian cargo addressed for refugees and the population, which has suffered as a result of NATO's military operation in the Balkans. Simultaneously, concrete regions and corridors for humanitarian aid deliveries will be defined in the country. In agreement with Switzerland and Greece, Russia's Ministry for Emergencies will already on May 3 and 4 start transferring humanitarian cargoes and the first convoy of 24 trucks, which earlier participated in UN humanitarian operations. [08] GREEK PRESIDENT TO PAY OFFICIAL VISIT TO GEORGIA ON MAY 10Web Posted: 17:06 GMT+2Tbilisi, 02/05/1999 (MPA) The President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos is to conduct a two-day official visit to Georgia on May 10, the first visit by a Greek president to Georgia after the Caucasian republic became independent.The President will meet with his Georgian counterpart Eduard Shevardnadze, parliamentary speaker Zurab Zhvania, Foreign Minister Irakly Menangarishvili and other officials. Discussions will focus on issues of further development of cooperation between the two countries, as well as regional problems. A.F. [D] WORLD[09] GREEK PRESIDENT TO PAY VISIT TO ARMENIA ON MAY 11-13Web Posted: 17:06 GMT+2Yerevan, 02/05/1999 (MPA) The President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos will pay an official visit to Armenia on May 11-13 at the invitation of the republic's leadership.Before arriving in Armenia the President will make an official visit to Georgia. While in Tbilisi, he will meet Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, the parliament speaker and the foreign minister to discuss further development of cooperation between the two countries and regional issues.
