    [01] GREECE CELEBRATES SHROVE MONDAY TODAY

    Thessaloniki, 22/02/1999 (MPA) Shrove Monday was celebrated through out Greece today , where the sunny weather marked the on start of Halcyon days.

    In view of the increased traffic, the highway patrol has taken additional measures to ensure a safe trip home to the city dwellers who took the opportunity of the three-day weekend for a ride in the countryside.

    [02] BULGARIA-FYROM AGREEMENT SIGNED IN SOFIA TODAY

    Sofia, 22/02/1999 (MPA) Under the critical remarks of Bulgaria's opposition parties and intellectual elite, the Courtney's premier Ivan Kostov signed today the agreement with FYROM which recognizes linguistic dialects as an official language.

    FYROM's Premier Liuptco Georgievski is also to sign an additional seven accords concerning cultural and trade cooperation.

    [03] COUNCIL OF EUROPE SUMMIT TO BE HELD IN TURKEY

    Strasbourg, 22/02/1999 (MPA) The European Council will hold its Summit on "Democratic Stability, Peace and Sustainable Growth in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions", on February 25-26 in Turkey.

    Also, the joint meeting the C of E's Parliamentary Assembly and the congress of Local-regional Authorities of Europe, which will feature the participation of 40 countries, will take place at Marmaris, off the Sea of Marmara, precisely where PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan is being held prisoner by the Turkish state.

    EU Commissioner Hans van den Broek will visit Istanbul on February 24-25, at a time when Ankara is requesting that EU funds allocated for Turkey be freed.

    [04] FOREIGN MINISTER PAPANDREOU SATISFIED WITH EU'S STATEMENT

    Strasbourg, 22/02/1999 (MPA) Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou has stated that he is fully satisfied with the content of the statement issued by the EU allies.

    "This statement gives Turkey the opportunity, if it meets the conditions set out in the statement, to strengthen its ties with the European Union," Mr. Papandreou told reporters at a news conference.

    Greece, he added, had insisted on the statement because a large number of Kurdish political refugees had found sanctuary in Greece and other European countries and because it believed the statement would contribute to achieving stability in the wider region of the Balkans.

    He underlined that Turkey as a member of the Council of Europe would have to satisfy a series of commitments in relation to Ocalan's trial.

    [05] EU GENERAL AFFAIRS COUNCIL HELD IN STRASBOURG TODAY

    Strasbourg, 22/02/1999 (MPA) The European Union's General Affairs Council, presently being held in Strasbourg, has issued a statement condemning all forms of terrorism and stressing that the fight against terrorism had to respect all human rights and democratic rules.

    The statement calls on Turkey to take all the necessary measures so as to ensure Kurd rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan's trial is conducted on the basis of the rule of law, with Ocalan receiving access to legal counsel of his choice and with international observers admitted to the trial. If Turkey is prepared to satisfactorily meet the above issues, the European Union is prepared to extend all forms of assistance, including financial, the foreign ministers said.
