Also, a 20-member delegation from the Trade, Industrial and Agricultural Commerce from the Romanian city of Vrancea visited the exhibition. A.F. Issues of security and stability."The event is being jointly organized by the Greek-Canadian Federation of Ontario, the Hellenic-Canadian congress, the Greek Community of the Metropolitan Toronto and the Cypriot community of Toronto. Mr. Athanasakis will also have a series of contacts with members of the Greek-Canadian community. A.F. [03] SNOW BLANKETS NORTHERN GREECE, FROST COVERS ROADSWeb Posted: 20:27 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 31/01/1999 (MPA) Heavy snow fall has blanketed most of northern Greece where temperatures have plummeted to below zero in many cities and frosty roads make driving hazardous.Anti-skid chains are required for vehicles traveling on the national highways and in most of the provincial roads. The city's "Macedonia" airport remained, with planes taking off later in the afternoon as icy runways made plane departures risky. According to the National Weather Service, the severe weather is to continue into the week, and will expand to most of the country. A.F. [B] BALKANS[04] GREEK ALTERNATE FM: CYPRUS CAN COUNT ON GREECEWeb Posted: 20:27 GMT+2Nicosia, 31/01/1999 (MPA) Wrapping up a three-day visit to Cyprus, Alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou stated today Cyprus will certainly become a member of the European Union, with or without a solution to its political problem.Mr. Papandreou stressed that all political powers in Greece and Cyprus should make a joint effort on a common course, adding that both countries are utilizing the decision of Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides not to deploy the S-300 missiles on the island. "This is something that we will do and we are doing", he said, adding that both countries have goals, which include Cyprus' European Union membership. Speaking after a meeting with Cyprus' Socialist Party EDEK leader, Vassos Lyssarides, Mr. Papandreou said that they discussed the cooperation between Greece and Cyprus regarding the joint defense pact, which, he said, is "a given fact." During his visit to Cyprus, Mr. Papandreou visited the relatives of missing persons, who gather at the Ledra Palace check point every weekend to enlighten tourists wishing to cross into the Turkish-occupied areas, about the Cyprus problem. Addressing the black-dressed relatives of persons missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion, Papandreou said "your pain is also my pain, it is the pain of the whole of Hellenism and of every person". He reassured them that Greece continues to support the Cyprus people's just cause and reiterated that "the struggle will continue until its final vindication." A.F. There are hopes that the two conflicting sides will make some progress during their negotiations set to start on February 6 in France.The talks will be mediated by France's and Great Britain's Foreign Minister and will also have the direct involvement of the Contact Group. [C] EUROPE[06] GREEK PREMIER ON EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ELECTIONSWeb Posted: 20:27 GMT+2Vienna, 31/01/1999 (MPA) Following the end of the two-day Summit Conference of the European Socialist Party, held in Vienna, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis stated that the upcoming European Parliament elections will determine some matters of critical importance to Greece.The European socialist leaders endorsed an elections manifesto that pledges to lower unemployment, expand social policies, boost growth and improve environmental protection. The manifesto is destined for ratification at a congress of the Party of European Socialists, to be held in Milan on March 1- 2. Mr. Simitis said that European socialists and social democrats wanted solutions to guarantee growth and employment. "Economic progress so far has helped to ensure stability and growth in Europe. But clouds on the horizon - financial crises - are likely to suspend the growth process, having a negative impact on employment," Simitis said. A.F.
