During the event, the German driver will present a special award to ELPA for its role in promoting the scheme in Greece. [02] GREEK TRAWLER OWNERS CALL OFF PROTEST, CLEAR PORTWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2tHESSALONIKI, 10/01/1999 (MPA) Greek owners of trawler boats have decided to call off their strike in protest to a European Union directive, for the time being, following a meeting held with Agriculture Minster George Anomeritis yesterday.The fishermen are protesting EU Directive 1626 which reduces the distance from the coast in which fishing is permitted and increases the mesh size of nets. Members of the Panhellenic Union of Trawler Owners had moored their boats in protest along the Thessaloniki seafront. Trawler owners claim the provision of the directive stipulating a larger mesh for nets will result in a 50 per cent reduction in catches, since smaller fish will slip through, while Turkish trawlers will continue to catch those fish and channel them to the Greek market. According to reports, the talks will center on Cyprus's accession to the EU. A.F. The Panthessaly Coordinating Committee of Farmers is to conduct a city rally by the end of the month or in early February at prefectural offices and Agricultural Bank branches, while some local roads will be blockaded. "The Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace will be a responsible and daring leader in the efforts to develop the border regions, the northern Greek sector, for the development and achievement of Greece's new role," he said. However, for the time being, there will be no such changes. If the Premier deemed a reshuffle necessary, then he would discuss it with political party leaders who participating in the government coalition." A.F. He stated that he had very interesting talks with his Albanian counterpart with whom he discussed the Kosovo issue. A.F. [C] WORLD[10] GREECE'S DEPUTY FM HEADS PARTY DELEGATION ON ISRAEL VISITWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Tel Aviv, 10/01/1999 (MPA) Greece's deputy Foreign Minister Yiannos Kranidiotis is presently heading a delegation of PASOK party officials who embarked on an official visit to Israel today.The delegates, among them PASOK central committee member Theodoros Tsoukatos, are to also visit the Palestine self-rule areas as they have been invited to Israel by both the Israeli Labor Party and the Organization for the Liberation of Palestine (PLO). They will meet with Labor Party leader Ehud Barak, Israel's Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Jerusalem Patriarch Diodoros. A.F.
