[01] ZORBA'S GRANT CHILDREN WILL RECEIVE THE GREEK NATIONALITY

    Web Posted: 17:27 GMT+2
Thessaloniki, 19/12/1998 (MPA) The grant children of Alexis (Giorgos) Zorba, Anna Gaiger and Evangelos Giantas, will receive the Greek nationality in Athens today.

In an event held yesterday in Electra Palace Hotel in Thessaloniki, Kazantzakis Foundation chairman Patroklos Stavrou presented an unpublished letter of Alexis Zorba to author Nikos Kazantzakis dated 23/9/1923, while a video with scenes from the grave of Zorba in Skopje was screened as well as, parts of Mikis Theodorakis concert in FYROM in which he performed his work "Zorba the Greek".

Alexis Zorba's grant daughter, Anna Gaiger, became very emotional during the ceremony and said that now is the big opportunity to tell everybody all about Greece and the Greeks.

During yesterday's event the village of Katafigio in the prefecture of Kozani in north-western Greece, where Zorba was born, declared his two grant children as its honorary citizens.

[02] KAKLAMANIS MET WITH THE NEW AMBASSADOR OF YUGOSLAVIA

    Web Posted: 17:27 GMT+2
Athens, 19/12/1998 (MPA) The need to make every effort for the solution of the problem in Kosovo was stressed by Greek parliament president Apostolos Kaklamanis in the meeting he had yesterday with the new ambassador of Yugoslavia to Athens Dragomir Vucicevic.

The Yugoslav high ranking diplomat briefed Mr. Kaklamanis on the course of the implementation of the Halbrooke-Milosevic agreement and pointed out Belgrade's wish to continue the political dialogue with the leaders of Kosovo in spite of the fact that they do not respond to this effort.

In the meeting it was also stressed that the Greek-Yugoslav relations are at an excellent level. Mr. Kaklamanis stated that he will make a formal visit to Belgrade in 1999 accepting the invitation of his Yugoslav counterpart and added that an invitation will be issued for the External Affairs Committee president of the Yugoslav parliament to visit Greece.

[03] KAKLAMANIS' STATEMENTS ON THE US-BRITISH AIR STRIKES AGAINST IRAQ

    Web Posted: 17:27 GMT+2
Athens, 19/12/1998 (MPA) No one can approve of the US-British actions against Iraq, said Greek parliament president Apostolos Kaklamanis, adding that the US and Britain use certain excuses to justify those operations which have no trace of international legality. The statement was made in an interview to ANT1 radio station in Athens yesterday and Mr. Kaklamanis pointed out that the reasons put forward are just an excuse because it is clear that the United States invoke the International Law principles and the UN Security Council decisions whenever it is to their own interest either for strategic interests or for domestic reasons.

The hypocricy of the United States, said Mr. Kaklamanis, is evident in the case of Cyprus where 40% of its territory is under the occupation of the Turkish forces for 25 years and the United States have not shown a similar interest to put an end to the occupation even though Turkey continues to ignore the UN Security Council decisions made on Cyprus.

[04] STUDENTS' MEETING ON THE FUTURE OF THEIR MOBILIZATIONS

    Web Posted: 17:27 GMT+2
Athens, 19/12/1998 (MPA) The coordinating committees of students from all over Greece will meet in Athens tomorrow to decide on the future of their mobilizations which according to their statements, will continue in the new year.

The students protest against the education reform promoted by the ministry of education and call on minister Gerasimos Arsenis to abolish the law in question. Meanwhile, students continue to occupy 3.000 schools across the country, while the street blockade protests continue as well.

[05] NO NEW TAX WILL BE IMPOSED IN 1999

    Web Posted: 17:27 GMT+2
Athens, 19/12/1998 (MPA) No new tax will be imposed in 1999, stated minister of national economy and finance Yiannos Papantoniou speaking in parliament during the discussion on the new budget. He also announced the further cut of indirect taxation by 170 billion drachmas.

New Democracy parliamentary spokesman, responding to the statements made by Mr. Papantoniou, accused him of telling lies before the prime minister and the parliament deputies by maintaining that the taxes are not being increased and that no new ones will be imposed. The discussion on the new budget will be completed on Monday at midnight with an open vote.

[07] THREE NEW AIR ATTACKS AGAINST IRAQ

    Web Posted: 17:27 GMT+2
Baghdad, 19/12/1998 (MPA) Three new air attacks against Iraq were launched during the night by the US and British forces, while the Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, is underway. According to information, "SAM" missile launchers, located outside Baghdad, have been hit. US officials have stated that the final decision on the end of the air attacks will be made after an assessment of the three-day air-strikes.

The Ramadan will not affect the US air strikes against Iraq, stated US Secretary of Defense William Cohen.

Saddam Hussein called on the Iraqis and the Arabs to fight back against the criminals. Meanwhile, the reactions continue as the Russian foreign minister threatened his US counterpart that the relations between the two countries is possible to be seriously hit if the attacks against Baghdad continue.
