[03] HALBROOKE: GREECE EXERCISES A CLEAR POLICY

    Web Posted: 15:57 GMT+2
Skopje, 30/05/1998 (MPA) In an interview to Skopje's radio US mediator Richard Halbrooke stated that Greece exercises a clear policy within the framework of its interests. Mr. Halbrooke referred to the Cyprus problem, the Greek-Turkish relations, the issue of the name of FYROM and the situation in Kosovo, while he commented on the state of the US-FYROM relations.

Commenting on the differences in the mediation in Cyprus and in Bosnia, the US official stated that the mediation in Bosnia was made during the war, while in Cyprus the clashes had stopped since 1974.

Mr. Halbrooke said that in the case of the Greek-FYROM relations, the US contributed to their progress with the interim accord but he avoided to respond when he was asked about the issue of the name that should be used by FYROM saying that the negotiations on the issue continue.

On Kosovo, Richard Halbrooke said that in the case of war the refugees will not end up only in FYROM but in other countries as well such as, Albania, Italy and Switzerland and added that in any case the United States would not want the destabilization of FYROM.

On the presence of UNPREDEP, he said that the extension of its mandate is necessary and added that its forces should be reinforced to better guard the borders. The US mediator stated that the relations of the United States with FYROM are excellent and pointed out that the US support the territorial integrity and sovereignty of FYROM and they will recognize it as a state after its disputes with Greece are settled.

[04] ANKARA BLOCKS THE NORMALIZATION OF THE GREEK-TURKISH RELATIONS

    Web Posted: 15:57 GMT+2
Luxembourg, 30/05/1998 (MPA) Turkey is the one that hampers the normalization of the Greek-Turkish relations, pointed out Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos during his meeting with US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in Luxembourg yesterday.

The Greek minister pointed out that Athens and Ankara are close to signing an agreement on confidence building measures even though the Turkish side seeks to discuss issues not scheduled to be included in the talks.

Ms. Albright characterized as extremely interesting the proposal made by Mr. Pangalos for a moratorium of military flights over Cyprus and pledged to consider it.

Meanwhile, Turkish foreign minister Ismail Cem reiterated that there is a risk of unpleasant developments in the Aegean even as a result of an accidental occurrence.
