Nicosia, 23/05/1998 (MPA) US assistant Secretary of State Thomas Pickering expressed disappointment for the failure of US presidential envoy Richard Habrooke's mission to win the reopening of the community talks in Cyprus.

The US government official clarified that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash himself made it clear that Turkey insists in Cyprus' withdrawal from the EU accession talks and demands the recognition of the Turkish Cypriot regime in the Turkish occupied northern part of the island. The US official also stressed that the United States react to the Turkish stance that undermines progress.

He stated that the US government will continue the efforts for the solution of the Cyprus problem in spite of the disappointment caused by the failure of the Halbrooke mission.
